India: E-passport is among Govt priorities
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar  on Monday said his ministry has proposed manufacture of  e-passports  on priority so that the travel document with advanced security features can be rolled out in the near future. Speaking at the seventh Passport Seva Divas, Jaishankar said the ministry has initiated discussions with the 'India Security Press' regarding the project for issuing chip-enabled e-passports to the citizens. "We propose to pursue the manufacture of e-passports on priority so that a new passport booklet with advanced security features can be rolled out in the near future," the minister said.
He said that in line with the commitment made by the government in its previous tenure, the ministry shall continue with the process of opening new Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) in every Lok Sabha Constituency where no seva kendras exist today.

Tyre Association trial traceability technology
United Kingdom: The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) announced the successful completion of a digital tyre tracking trial. Conducted with TRA member, Fraser Evans & Sons Ltd , and technology partner PragmatIC , the trial used Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags. The tags are fixed to the tyre by the collector, who assigns them to their future use, for example retreading or reprocessing. These tags remain attached to the tyre right through to its end-of-life and the data they contain is simply accessed using a handheld scanner, which reads the unique RFID. The data extracted from the tags is restricted to a unique identifying number. Separately, a Cloud-based system automatically attributes information to it, meaning no sensitive date is actually stored on the tag. The data is read by an app, installed at the users’ premises and provides the basis for insightful user reports, which provide much easier visibility on the number of tyres collected and the use to which they have been allocated. Having data in this electronic format also allows for far greater scope to generate bespoke reports and requests. For more click here
FDA to launch pilot blockchain network with IBM, KPMG, Walmart and Merck for drugs traceability
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this month selected IBM, Merck, KPMG and Walmart to participate in a pilot programme to create a proof-of-concept blockchain network to enhance the security of drugs supply chain, as per a joint release by the companies. The pilot has been authorised under the US Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), which aims to establish a regulatory oversight framework to regulate counterfeit, stolen, contaminated, or otherwise harmful drugs. Drug diversion — when prescription drugs are hijacked from the legal market — is a major and costly dilemma plaguing the healthcare industry: nearly 19 million pills, worth up to $164 million went missing in the first half of 2018.
