America Likes Rodeo

It doesn't get much more Western than this.

The Wild Bill Hickok PRCA Rodeo returns July 28-31, 2026, bringing four nights of rodeo action to the Central Kansas Free Fair.

Named for legendary Old West lawman Wild Bill Hickok, who served as marshal of Abilene during its cattle town era, the rodeo celebrates another chapter of the American story with bull riding, bronc riding, barrel racing, roping, and more.

Chisholm Trail Days: Longhorns & Legends Brings the Old West to Life in Abilene

August 15-16, 2026 | Old Abilene Town | Abilene, Kansas

There are places where you can read about the Old West. In Abilene, you can stand where it happened.

On August 15 and 16, Old Abilene Town will celebrate the people, cattle and stories that made Abilene one of the most famous cowtowns in the American West during Chisholm Trail Days: Longhorns & Legends.

Longhorns will parade through town. Wild Bill Hickok will return to the streets through living history. Can-can girls will perform, a string band will play at the pavilion, and historic buildings will welcome visitors throughout the day. Then, on Sunday, a new bronze monument honoring Wild Bill Hickok will be dedicated near Hickok's Cabin.

It is a fitting celebration for 2026, as America marks its 250th birthday and Abilene shares its place in the American story.

Where the Chisholm Trail Ended

Before Abilene became known around the world as the hometown of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, it was famous for cattle.

In 1867, Joseph G. McCoy saw opportunity in the small Kansas community. He developed stockyards and shipping facilities near the railroad, creating a market where Texas cattle could be driven north and shipped by rail to eastern markets.

The result helped change Abilene forever.

From 1867 to 1871, hundreds of thousands of cattle arrived in Abilene at the end of the Chisholm Trail. Along with them came cowboys, merchants, gamblers, saloonkeepers and some of the most recognizable characters of the American frontier.

More than 150 years later, Chisholm Trail Days celebrates that chapter of Abilene's story in the place where it happened.

Longhorns Return to Abilene

One of the highlights of Chisholm Trail Days will be hard to miss.

Texas longhorns will parade through Old Abilene Town three times on Saturday, giving visitors a glimpse of the cattle that once defined this community.

Longhorn parades are scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

At 1:30 p.m., visitors can also watch as longhorns are loaded onto the train, recalling the process that made Abilene such an important cattle shipping point.

It is one thing to see a longhorn in a photograph. It is another to hear the hoofbeats and watch those unmistakable horns coming down the street in an Old West town.

Meet the Legends of the Old West

Longhorns are only half of the story. Chisholm Trail Days also celebrates the legends who made Abilene famous.

Among them is James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok.

By 1871, Abilene was one of the busiest cowtowns in America. Thousands of cattle, cowboys and visitors passed through the community, and maintaining order was no easy task. Following the death of legendary lawman Tom "Bear River" Smith, city leaders hired Hickok to serve as marshal.

For eight months, Wild Bill patrolled Abilene's streets and added another chapter to a reputation that would eventually make him one of the best-known figures of the American West.

During Chisholm Trail Days, visitors can hear Wild Bill stories at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and watch Wild Bill reenactments at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Can-can girls take the stage at 12:30 and 2 p.m., while string band performances are scheduled for noon and 3:15 p.m.

Throughout the day, visitors can explore the Trail Center Museum, Great Western Cattle Co. Museum, General Store, Alamo Saloon and other historic buildings. Games, face painting, photo opportunities and demonstrations add to the experience.

Food trucks will also be on site, including 7 ate 5, 100 Acre Woods Catering, Filio and Riley's Lemonade.

A New Tribute to Wild Bill Hickok

The celebration continues Sunday, August 16, with an important addition to Abilene's collection of Western art.

At 1 p.m., Old Abilene Town will dedicate a new bronze monument honoring Wild Bill Hickok, followed by a reception in the Alamo Saloon.

Created by Nebraska artist David R. Young, the sculpture depicts Hickok holding the legendary "dead man's hand," two aces and two eights, alongside his pistol.

Young has a special connection to Hickok's legacy. His work includes the monument at Hickok's gravesite in Deadwood, South Dakota. Gifted to Abilene by the artist's family, the new bronze will stand near Hickok's Cabin at Old Abilene Town.

The sculpture will also become a featured stop on Abilene's Cowboy Art Trail and the Kansas Gunsmoke Trail, giving visitors another reason to follow Wild Bill's story through the community.

Follow Wild Bill's Footsteps Around Abilene

Chisholm Trail Days is a great starting point for a Wild West weekend in Abilene.

At Old Abilene Town, visitors can tour Hickok's Cabin and explore the recreated cattle town.

Downtown, a marker at 101 N. Cedar Street identifies the original site of the Alamo Saloon, near the location of Hickok's famous 1871 shootout with gambler and saloon owner Phil Coe.

A larger-than-life Wild Bill Hickok mural at 201 N. Buckeye Avenue makes a great photo stop, while the Dickinson County Heritage Center includes Hickok exhibits, a bronze bust and a replica firearm.

You can even find Wild Bill on the World's Largest Belt Buckle and represented on one of Abilene's Cowboy Boot sculptures.

Together, these stops tell a story that extends well beyond a single weekend.

Celebrate America's 250th Where History Happened

As the United States celebrates its 250th birthday, Chisholm Trail Days offers an opportunity to experience a distinctly American story.

The cattle drives transformed communities, connected ranches in Texas with markets across the country and helped shape the mythology of the American West. Abilene's role in that story was brief, but extraordinary.

Joseph McCoy. The Chisholm Trail. Texas longhorns. Wild Bill Hickok. The railroad.

Their stories all came together here.

Today, Old Abilene Town keeps those stories alive, and during Chisholm Trail Days, visitors can experience them with the sights, sounds and even the hoofbeats of the cattle-drive era.
