CHARITY RANDALL FOUNDATION AWARDS $300,000 FOR HARTWOOD ACRES SCULPTURE GARDEN
The Charity Randall Foundation recently awarded a grant to create a permanent endowment fund for long-term maintenance of the sculpture collection, "insuring that the garden remains a jewel of Allegheny County for years to come."
This grant comes at a crucial point in our process, as it will assure future funders that ACPF has addressed issues around long-term maintenance so that the restored sculptures do not fall into disrepair.
Earlier, ACPF received funding from the Hillman Foundation, Fine Foundation Allegheny Foundation and the Fox Chapel Garden Club for this project.

The employees at Patagonia in Shadyside, pictured with ACPF Development and Project Manager Barbara Brewton, voted to fund a project in Hartwood Acres Park.
The Little Pine Creek Riparian Restoration Project will convert a mowed hillside into a diverse mix of native trees, scrubs, grasses and wildflowers. It also includes the removal of invasive plants. The project is located in a highly visible area in Hartwood Acres Park which is enjoyed by dog park visitors and concert attendees at the County's Summer Concert Series.
Patagonia's employee grant of nearly $9,000 to ACPF will provide additional trees, shrubs and perennials to be planted this fall with student volunteers from nearby schools. This project provides a valuable educational opportunity to learn about storm water management and the role trees play in mitigating climate change.

The Penn State Master Gardeners invite you to join them at the Indian Hill Meadow of Boyce Park for a free, informational walk this summer.
The dates are:

Time: 6:30 to 7:30 PM
Each walk is limited to 20 participants so register early!
The Allegheny County Parks Foundation and Allegheny County Parks partnered last year to establish a meadow on a previously mowed hillside. It produced an explosion of color and drew visitors from around the region.
This summer we want to share our experiences and knowledge about this beneficial ecosystem and asset to our parks.
The Boyce Park Rangers will also join the meadow walk to answer your questions.

Caitlin Harpster
Development Manager of Individual Giving
|
Caitlin joined the Allegheny County Parks Foundation in April as Development Manager of Individual Giving. Caitlin is enthusiastic about sustaining the environmental assets that are our shared green spaces, and feels strongly that parks are a place to explore, to learn, to recharge and reconnect with the world around you. Caitlin can oftentimes be found hiking, biking or camping the region’s parks and forests, or visiting a museum on rainy days. Additionally, she is an active member of Brookline Together, a registered community organization, serving on the Business Development and Beautification Committees. Caitlin joins the Parks Foundation after leading the Mattress Factory’s development team for the last three years.
Caitlin moved to Pittsburgh to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where she received a BA in the History of Art & Architecture and Studio Arts. She then earned a MA from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London in Contemporary Art.
Caitlin is especially excited to be joining the Parks Foundation at a time when it is creating the Hartwood Acres Sculpture Garden, where her arts background will be a significant asset to nurturing a new generation of patrons and visitors.

Nicole Oeler
Project Manager
|
Nicole joined the Parks Foundation in March. She is a registered Landscape Architect in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and is a LEED Green Associate. She has over 18 years of diverse experience in the field ranging from master planning, botanical garden design, land development, green infrastructure planning, community design, recreation design and teaching. Her work with award winning landscape architecture firms combined with her experiences at successful multi-disciplinary engineering firms have afforded her the knowledge to create unique but practical designs. Her love for nature, preservation of natural resources and the care and concern of the environment give her the passion and drive to provide environmentally responsible design solutions.
Nicole loves seeing how the spaces she creates positively impacts the lives of others. It makes her proud to see people enjoying the many outdoor spaces she has worked on, especially with her own family. In her spare time Nicole enjoys traveling with her family, with emphasis on visiting the National Parks. She graduated from the University of Kentucky (UK) where she rode on the UK Equestrian Team. Nicole is very excited to be a part of the Parks Foundation where she gets to work on projects with design teams who share in the common desire to preserve and improve the environment for future generations.

At its recent annual meeting, the Allegheny County Parks Foundation Board of Directors elected new officers:

The Board also honored the lengthy service of Founding Board Chairman John P. Surma as he moves to emeritus status.

Penn State Master Gardeners of Allegheny County Garden Marketplace

If you love plants and are looking for unusual, affordable selections, the Penn State Master Gardeners of Allegheny County Garden and Landscape Symposium and Marketplace should always be on your April calendar. The PSU Master Gardeners of Allegheny County are a valuable partner to the ACPF and this is their largest fundraiser of the year. Many garden fans came out to support them! Thanks to all who visited our table! It was fun meeting you and sharing news of our projects. See you next year!
