Dear Sarah Bakes Eaters & Sharers:

I hope everyone dear to you is safe and sound from the storms here in the Philadelphia area last weekend – they were somethin’ fierce! I also hope that in the days ahead, you can stay cool as a zuke!

I am often asked, “what’s your favorite thing to bake?” I almost always reply with “something I haven’t baked yet.” Trying something new in the kitchen can lead to delicious discoveries of (pop) culture, history, or family treasures. Cooking classes are a great way for me to mix it up.

Last summer, Rebecca and I learned how to make Venezuelan arepas from Maria of Autana (find her from 3-6pm on Wednesdays at the Bala Cynwyd Farmers Market), and many years back, my father-in-law and I spent a weekend at King Arthur Flour in Vermont taking a variety of baking classes, and then of course, there was my mom, who taught cooking classes my whole life! We explored different cultures and made memories – that’s why playing in the kitchen is so wonderful!

Fast forward to this past month. I began the process of learning a couple of new things! I took two baking classes at L’Atelier Bakery in Manayunk. The first was a croissant class and boy oh boy, there’s a lot that goes into a flaky crescent of delectable goodness. Julie, the pastry chef, teacher, and owner, knows how to put on a great afternoon of fun with butter. Don’t expect me to be selling them at our Farmers Market, but Trophy Spouse and I swooned over the best lobster rolls that evening (thank you, Small World Seafood!) – decadent, truly decadent!

Rick joined me for the second class – a date night! He totally geeked out over Julie’s electric mixer, which is much bigger than mine, and has so much torque that it has shock absorbers! Thanks to their meticulous planning, we were able to make baguettes in three hours; without the “magic of television,” it would take more than a day from start to finish. We ate delicious snacks made by Julie and her sous chef, Sarah, took varying degrees of copious notes, enjoyed ourselves immensely, and came home with a sourdough starter whom we named Pepe.

Learning Never Stops. Rebecca’s recent diagnosis of celiac disease will keep me researching recipes, trying different ingredients, and seeking out new techniques – and when I have a winning yummy to share, I certainly will do that!

This week at the Market will showcase the return of the No-Way-It’s-Zuke Chocolate Cake featuring the freshest veggies from Urban Roots (I haven’t even picked them up from the farm yet!). This TRIPLE Chocolate Sour Cream Cake is tremendous.

Pre-order yours!
