Choices

We voted. We listened, researched and voted our choices for men and women to represent us in community, state and federal positions.

All our lives we meet the need to make choices.

Santa Cruz Parent exists to offer information, differing opinions and choices for families, to share options with you. Like you, we have opinions based on our family culture, our education, life experiences, mentors if we are fortunate, and a thirst for continuous learning.

Over the years, we've shared many articles on education from a variety of sources. Why? Education is a huge part leading to success as an adult.

As an editor I strive to find information for parents to consider when seeking an educational environment that's a match for each child's needs. I just discovered a trend I was unaware of quietly developing but not receiving much notice. Scroll down.

We have our children with us for a scant 18 years. Each year counts. Be involved in your child's schooling. Communicate with your child's teachers. Be aware of current research, visit schools, talk with home schoolers, read about micro-schools, explore the many choices for post-high schoolers.

Have a wonderful fall weekend, Parmalee

Articles of Interest to Parents

How to Get More Male Teachers, by Richard Reeves This article looks at teacher hiring trends and ways to change them for the benefit of all of us. The "ways to change them" apply to all teachers.

“No Nights (or Chapters) Off.” And Other Grown Up Lessons From Reading to My Kids, by Mark Cecil on What He’s Learned From the Toughest Audience There Is, Children

Private Schools in Santa Cruz County Welcome Your Inquiry - These introductions offer a brief introduction to private schools in Santa Cruz County. We encourage you to visit their websites for more information, and remember there is no substitute for an in-person visit! You may think “I can’t afford private school,” but there are scholarship and sliding scale programs at most schools.

How-Tos for Educational Entrepreneurs, With an estimated 1 out of 10 US students now attending a microschool, at least one-third of parents wanting their children to attend one, and climbing rates of homeschooling and private schooling, it’s exciting to see us inch closer to FEE founder Leonard Read’s vision for a fully free market in education, defined by entrepreneurship, innovation, choice, and voluntary exchange.

Adopt a Family for the holidays

with the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County!

We partner with 32 local non-profits and social service agencies to meet the needs of local families struggling in our community. Our partners provide us with a short bio about each family and a wish list of gifts for each family member.

All of these families are struggling with special circumstances such as homelessness, displaced by natural disasters or floods, parents in recovery, parents or children with disabilities, victims of violent crime, families facing serious health challenges, or other hardships.

Sponsors provide families with holiday packages that include grocery store gift certificates, clothing items, a gift for each child, and household items like blankets, towels, or sheets.

Deliver these items to our donation center at the Capitola Mall, December 7th - 10th.

If you'd like to deliver gifts directly to a family - please contact our office at 831-457-9834 or email adoptafamily@scvolunteercenter.org

Agency partners will continue to add families until November 14th. For a list of partners please email adoptafamily@scvolunteercenter.org
