In this masterful translation, Heaney exposes the darkness and the humanity in Sophocles' masterpiece Antigone. Sophocles' play explores the conflict between those who affirm the individual's human rights and those in power who are protecting the security of the state.

The Burial at Thebes is a 5th Century BC play that is prophetically still alive and relevant in 21st century America. In our time, we see political leaders who cling to power, willing to crush the rights of individuals and groups who stand in their way. Antigone is a powerful female who stands up for her beliefs courageously because the consequences are so great.

The Ballard High School production will be set in 2016 during the Women’s March in Washington D.C., bringing Sophocles’ classic drama to the forefront of American politics and the continuing battle for human rights.

Trigger warning: this show contains themes pertaining to suicide.

Wind Ensemble and Navy Band Northwest Perform November 10

BHS Wind Ensemble is thrilled to be sharing the stage with Navy Band Northwest on November 10, 2022 in the Earl Kelly Performing Arts center. Students will have the opportunity to work with these talented musicians during the day and to share the concert stage that evening. All band students will be asked to attend, whether on stage or not. The caliber of musicianship that the Navy Band has to offer is exceptional and we encourage every family to attend.

The Wind Ensemble will perform alone first, and then share the stage with the Navy Band Northwest for Holst’s 2nd Suite in F Concert, to be finished off with a performance by The Navy Band Northwest.

Help Fund Our Programs

Better Together Direct Giving Campaign Is Underway!

We kicked off our direct give campaign on opening night of the play on Thursday. Now more than ever we need your help to rebuild our programs. We are fully back together and couldn’t be more excited, but being back together means we have some rebuilding to do.  Getting back into award-winning performance shape, spending money on things we haven’t had to for the last 3 years, and making sure everyone has the opportunity to go on those amazing trips.

Please give as generously as you can. We appreciate any and all donations.

We are raising funds for scholarships, so all students can participate in the trips, and for coaching / clinicians for special events, private lessons, and to pay for instructors for classes like Jazz Band, Drumline, choir accompanist, and more.

Our direct giving campaign will run through November 16th. We will celebrate our successes at the wrap party at Bickerson’s Brewery the night of the 16th.

It’s easy to donate! Tiy can give in four easy ways:

  • TEXT TO GIVE: Text BETTER2GETHER22 to 44321
  • GIVE ONLINE: Visit www.ballardperformingarts.com and click Donate.
  • WRITE A CHECK
  • GET CORPORATE MATCHING DONATIONS

There will be student performances, and this is a great chance to get to know other parents in the program in a casual setting.

Admission is free, but we’ll have raffles and opportunities to donate to the program. Students should look for a signup link to reserve a slot for a performance soon.

It’s Time to Sell Some Candy to Earn Money for Trips!

Want your child to earn some money toward their spring trip? A limited number of cases of candy are still available to sell. Students can come to the uniform room before school this week to pick it up. Please bring the completed candy form with you.

Coming Soon: Online Coffee Sales to Support BPA Students

We are partnering once again with Caffe Appassionato to sell delicious 12 oz. bags of coffee to family, friends, and neighbors. For every $14 bag purchased under their name, students will earn $6. That $6/bag earns credit to that student's ASB account and those funds can then be used to pay for BPA program fees and trips, and they can even be transferred to a younger sibling when a student graduates. Sales without a student name will go to the BPA ASB fund to help with music program support. There are four delicious blends to choose from (in both drip ground and whole bean):

Arietta Blend - A medium roast with a mellow and smooth flavor. Notes of cardamom, tart, caramel, and undertones of milk chocolate, strawberry, and jasmine.

Tempest Blend - As a bold and strong French roast, it accentuates a dark and full body with a smoky finish. Notes of caramel, toffee, orange, and undertones of raspberry, hazelnut, and cinnamon.

Espresso Blend - A bright and smooth Italian roast. Perfect for silky smooth espresso or robust drip.

Decaffeinated - A French roast that is smooth with a caramel finish. Notes of blackberry, almond, and toffee, and undertones of vanilla, cinnamon, and tangerine.

Coffee sales will be online on schoolpay starting November 2nd, and the order deadline will be November 16th. Coffee pickup for students will be at the performing arts winter concerts the week of December 5th.
