Dear Cholla Residents,
Many of you have contacted me about dead pine trees in the recently renovated medians on 67th Ave between Beardsley Road an Union Hills Drive.
Prior to the renovation, the irrigation system in the medians had not been working properly for quite sometime. The trees were stressed due to lack of regular watering and the extreme heat we have experienced over the past two summers.
Part of the median renovation included replacement of the irrigation system.
With that in mind, the decision was made to leave the mature pine trees in place, provide nutrients and regular watering hoping that the trees would recover.
Clearly, that has not been the case and sadly, most of the pine trees did not survive.
I have been monitoring the situation and have been advised that the dead pine trees are tentatively scheduled for removal beginning July 7, 2025. These trees are large and require special equipment that the City does not own, as it is not needed for our day-to-day operations. Therefore, this work will need to be performed by a contractor. Depending on the location, there will need to be traffic control including the potential need to have police officers controlling traffic at intersections.
Due to the harsh conditions the trees have endured, staff will also assess the remaining pine trees to determine which trees are in poor health and likely will not survive.
Those trees will also be removed.
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
