CALL TO ACTION!

Dear Cholla Residents,

Arizona State Senator Steve Kaiser has introduced legislation at the Arizona Legislature that will eliminate your voice in how the city protects neighborhoods through residential and commercial zoning. Senate Bill 1117 Housing; Infrastructure mandates approval of single and multi-family projects without allowing residents to work with the developer to ensure that it meets the needs of the surrounding community. Developers would be allowed to ignore zoning districts, zoning codes, design standards, and parking requirements, among other conditions. Residents would have zero notice and no opportunity to learn more about the project or provide valuable feedback. Under this legislation, no rezoning or general plan amendment would be required. This bill also prohibits planning commissions from reviewing housing projects, getting community input, and providing recommendations to the City Council. It presents several problems for the planning and development process for our city and residents. For example, multi-family developments would be allowed “by right” in any existing commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family zoning districts. This could include multi-family buildings up to 60 ft or the highest allowable height within one mile. It also applies to all areas designated in the general plan as “supporting” mixed uses, commercial or multi-family. This is significant because these areas often include single-family zoning districts and lots.

The City of Glendale opposes this legislation and will voice our opposition, but we need our community members to speak out to share our concerns. It is very difficult to reverse state law once enacted so our time to act is NOW. Construction Updates

City of Glendale Arts & Culture

Would like to invite Glendale residents to participate in a brief survey on two designs for the Sierra Verde Park well site, currently under construction at 71st Avenue & Rose Garden Lane.

Please review the following two designs by public artist John Randall Nelson and provide comments. Survey will close at 11:59 p.m. on March 8th, 2023.

Arrowhead Well UPDATE

The City of Glendale’s contractor has completed drilling and capping a well on the east side of 64^th Drive just south of Sack Drive to expand Glendale’s water resource portfolio to add resiliency in providing water to Glendale residents.

Sound walls will be removed within the next week or two, and next steps for this effort include designing and equipping the well site, and installation of the block wall around the perimeter of the well site.

Upcoming Activities & City Information

It's time for spring cleaning and an excellent time to review your property's exterior to ensure it’s clean and compliant with city code.

Glendale’s code compliance team will begin inspecting all residential properties for violations such as overgrown vegetation, dirt yards, items in public view, abandoned vehicles and debris.

Want a Career in Healthcare?

High school students interested in an in-depth look at healthcare careers are encouraged to apply for Midwestern University’s annual Health Careers Institute for High School Students, which will take place from July 13 – 22.

This FREE hands-on program is open to current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. It will take place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day at the University’s Glendale Campus. Sixty-four students will be admitted to the camp, up from 48 in previous years.

Applications are due by 4/1/23
