Dear Cholla Residents,
Midwestern University and BHHS Foundation recently presented the Annual Health Careers Institute for High School Students. The Institute provides an interactive, hands-on opportunity for high school juniors and seniors who are interested in a future in healthcare to sample medical careers. The event routinely draws over one hundred applications for a very limited number of spots in the program. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's Health Careers Institute format was modified to a five-day online seminar where students joined University presenters and mentors via teleconferencing software. Midwestern sent each participant a "care package" full of books, kits, and other items to be utilized during the lessons to help them practice medical techniques and participate interactively with each other. Students tried their hand at suturing, taking vital signs, and exploring and analyzing interactive models of human anatomy. Faculty and student mentors were able to guide the students through lessons in real time online.
(Thank you to Midwestern University for allowing us to share the following photo collage of students participating in the Health Careers Institute!)
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns that you may have. Members of City staff are still working remotely to observe social distancing practices, but I can assure you that my office is open and ready to serve your needs.
