Hard science to soft-serve: Turning a sweet idea into a business

New Hampshire native Sarah Thayer’s journey to become a business owner started when she lived in New York City and took an online course through Lakes Region Community College. Eventually returning to her home state, she went on to earn an associate degree in business management, bundling online courses from LRCC, Manchester Community College and NHTI-Concord’s Community College to fit her schedule.

While Sarah was busy working towards her degree, she and her now-fiancé found themselves missing their favorite ice cream shop on the lower east side. The pair would regularly travel 45 minutes by subway to get a taste of the shop’s unique milkshakes and ice cream, but found nothing comparable locally. As a gesture of love, Sarah’s fiancé took inspiration from their beloved dessert destination, a blender, and an assortment of Sarah’s favorite toppings to put their spin on the concept of treat-infused ice cream. The resulting concoction proved delicious and the two realized the potential for a business of their own by blending Sarah’s business acumen with her fiancé’s creativity. Thus was born the idea for Sunday’s Scoops and Treats (Sunday’s), which they opened in downtown Concord in June of 2022.

As they brought their dream to fruition, Sarah has had plenty of opportunities to reflect on the exciting new journey she and her fiancé have undertaken together: “Oftentimes, people try to tackle [opening a small business] later on in life because you have a little more life experience. As young business owners, we’re very much still learning. It’s hard, but it’s also fun – we’re talking about ice cream, after all.”

Sunday’s Scoops and Treats, located at 138 North Main Street in Concord, is open Tuesday through Friday 4 - 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 - 9 p.m.

Community College System of New Hampshire adds mental health resource information to student ID cards

Beginning this fall, student identification (ID) cards issued by New Hampshire’s community colleges will include mental health resource information to ensure students have ready access to help when experiencing a crisis or other mental health challenge. As the New Hampshire Legislature was considering SB234 this spring, a bill requiring student identification cards to include the telephone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, New Hampshire’s community colleges were at work planning for this measure.

To support and expand this effort, IDs issued by the community colleges will include the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence helpline and the 741741 Crisis Text Line, in addition to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and new three-digit helpline.

Immediate help for someone dealing with a mental health crisis can be lifesaving. New Hampshire community colleges make a variety of mental health supports available to students that encompass college services and programming, relationships with partner providers, and access to 24/7 online support students can access at no charge to connect with mental health providers.
