Chora Link - March 2020
In this issue: Highlights and comments from the 2020 Conference
Peggy Dettwiler,

ACDA Eastern Region President

Dear ACDA Eastern Region Colleagues,

In a previous Chora Link issue, I wrote about the importance of living in the moment. At the same time, I must acknowledge that we also live our lives through three realities: reflecting through memory, experiencing the now, and dreaming of the future. Since the 2020 ACDA Eastern Region Conference in Rochester is a part of history, we can still enjoy the highlights through pictures and recordings stored for our reflection.

I am sharing three pictures of our “invited” choirs: the American Spiritual Ensemble, Voices 21C, and the Eastman choral and orchestral forces involved in the Britten War Requiem performance, along with a few comments shared on Facebook or through email correspondence.

The American Spiritual Ensemble presented two concerts entitled “Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit” and participated in the Worship Event, "Singing with the Spirit."  With Everett McCorvey's dynamic leadership, the ASE inspired numerous standing ovations and these spontaneous comments:

I have no words.
Outrageously moving.
A mountaintop experience.
Breathtaking. Incredible concert – I cried at least ten times.

We also thank Voices 21C under the artistic leadership of André de Quadros for their dynamic presentation, "We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest." You made us think more deeply about how music can impact such social justice issues as feminine identity, forced migration & refugees, and race & violence.

Absolute knockout.
Life changing. Stunning.
Very thought-provoking.

And many thanks to William Weinert and the more than 300 musicians who performed Britten’s War Requiem with Tami Petty, soprano; Anthony Dean Griffey, tenor; Malcolm J. Merriweather, baritone; the Eastman Chorale, Eastman-Rochester Chorus, Repertory Singers, Women’s Chorus; the Bach Children’s Chorus, Karla Krogstad , Director; and the Genesee Valley Children’s Choir, Amy Cochrane , Director.

Bravo!  Outstanding performance.
Brilliant. Monumental.

Whether or not you attended the 2020 ACDA Eastern Region Conference, you can hear and/or watch most of the wonderful performances by ordering a recording from Soundwaves Recording!

There were 756 registered attendees in Rochester plus hundreds of singers from the various performing groups. Attendees have been invited to complete a survey so that we can hear your thoughts about highlights and hopes for future conferences.

An email with the survey was sent by Penelope Cruz , Program Chair and President-Elect. Your comments will help us celebrate the successes and also learn about your desires for improvement for future conferences. Penelope will lead the 2022 conference in BOSTON from February 9 through 12, 2022. Search for the email sent on March 18 and again on March 25.

At the conference, ACDA East celebrated the lives of our colleagues who passed away in the last three years. Thanks to Patrick Murphy, student at Mansfield University, for designing the visuals, the Susquehanna Chorale under the direction of Linda Tedford for Shaw-Parker's "Deep River," and Vicki Crone for coordinating the music and images into an I-Movie, In Remembrance.

Looking ahead: Future Chora Links will feature the work of choral leaders who focus on specific issues related to social & mental well-being and peace & justice issues.

Hope you all are staying well during these challenging days. We miss making music with our community, but, thanks to technology, we can share music and connect in ways not possible in earlier times.

Every good wish,
