Silver Linings: The Small Joys of Teaching
I think it’s safe to say that historians are already ferociously compiling and organizing their notes about 2020. Life has proven time and time again that it is unpredictable and that we are not the ones in control.
What I can say is that the one, constantly bright spot throughout every twist and turn of this pandemic has been my students. Their ability and willingness to adapt and make the best of difficult (understatement) situations is uncanny. I have always been one who rejects the mindset that you have to pretend that everything is “fine,” when it is anything but fine. In fact, I lost count of the number of situations that have left me feeling anything but fine. Further, I have learned that I cannot be everything for everybody, especially if I am not whole in my existence. Avoiding reality doesn’t make it any less real - you simply create a compound problem of reality mixed with denial. What a disastrous recipe that is! Instead of succumbing to defeat and seclusion, my students have taken the space I have worked tirelessly to create for them and made it one of genuine, open conversation and connectivity.
The reality is that our students, like many of us, are going to come out of this pandemic and the year 2020 whole, and having learned some of the most important lessons life has to offer. More than lessons on notes and rhythms, equations and essays, Xs and Os, they will recall lessons on empathy and patience, on persistence and selflessness. After all, if those things are not the bottom line of our daily work, why are we here?
