"The first fifteen years of my life were split between three different places. I was born in Pennsylvania, moved to New Hampshire when I was five, and lived overseas when I was ten. By the time I moved to Texas at age fifteen, I had visited twenty countries. My parents were missionaries and I grew up in a Christian environment, but my experience of God was centered around knowledge of Him rather than relationship with Him.
My family life was cold and distant. There were times we had fun together, but there was a lot of emotional distance between us. During my teenage years, I was exposed to pornography, and my eventual addiction resulted in deep shame and a distorted view of relationships. I felt so alone. The distance and the coldness plus the travel had reinforced the idea that I didn't belong anywhere."
