About Joseph Julián González ...
A native of Bakersfield, California, Joseph Julián González began his musical education at California State University, and continued it at UCLA, majoring in classical guitar performance and in composition for motion pictures. Since then, his compositions have been featured in over 200 films, documentaries, and television programs.
In 1997, as part of the Meet the Composer program, González was commissioned to write his Misa Azteca, which debuted at the Tijuana Cultural Center on Dec. 4, 1997, and has since then been performed in venues around the world.
In composing it, he combined Spanish and Latin texts of the Roman Catholic liturgy with songs from Cantares Mexicanos, the largest collection of pre-Columbian Nahuatl songs or poems to have been recorded. He was also influenced by J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and by the way Igor Stravinsky and Carl Orff created their blends of old and new, giving Misa Azteca a neo-Baroque feeling.
