CHURCH BY THE POND

August 29, 2026

The Gospel, to some, is not just writings from first century Palestine but living, breathing wisdom from the past speaking moral lessons for a good life today.

Today’s Epistle from Romans 12:9–21, for example, directs good people to: love one another, rejoice in hope, persevere in prayer and extend hospitality to strangers. The last admonition appears to me to be relevant to how we are currently treating and in many cases mistreating people not born in this country.

To be clear, I am NOT making a political statement regarding immigration policy and/or the deportation of people. I am saying that ANY moral person MUST advocate for humane treatment of ALL our neighbors while they are here.

Ultimately, the lesson concludes, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” By preaching today The Rev. Nancy Wright lived this good news with twenty-nine of God’s children present in the park; afterwards, a generous team from Trinity Episcopal Church, Tariffville provided 60 LUNCHES!!! to people in need.

THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY

AFTER PENTECOST

We are many members, yet one body in Christ.

Somos muchos miembros, pero un solo cuerpo en Cristo.

Today, on the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost, our Eucharistic celebration was held at 9:30 a.m., in the English and Spanish languages.

We had as celebrant and preacher The Rt. Rev. Andrew Smith, who exhorted us to dare to discover new things every day in relation to our faith and to try to find different meaning and advancement to each life experience. He also told us that a few words of encouragement can make the difference between innovation and monotony, both for those who offer it, and for those who receive it, and that it is up to all of us to be in one position or another.

Sometimes as the one who teaches and other times as the one who learns and thus make our Christian life better and better, it is our responsibility to listen and apply the teachings received from Jesus Christ in order to make the difference between advancement and stagnation: That doing the same thing always does not produce joy because it does not lead us in any new direction, that following Christ is a task of continuous change and new experience.

At 11 a.m. we had our customary meeting of hospitality.

ENGAGING THE CITY

RIVERSIDE PARK: RiverLink

Located just north of downtown Hartford, Riverside Park offers opportunities to explore nature, get active, spend time with family and friends, and experience the Connecticut River up close.

The Connecticut River is one of Hartford’s greatest natural resources — but for many North Hartford residents, getting there is not as easy or inviting as it should be. I-91 separates the neighborhood from Riverside Park, and the existing pedestrian overpass is steep, isolated, and inaccessible to many users.

That is where RiverLink comes in. The planned bike and pedestrian bridge will begin at Pleasant and Market Streets, cross over I-91, and descend near the Boathouse in Riverside Park. By creating a more welcoming entrance to the park, RiverLink will not only provide a way across the highway — it will connect people to everything waiting on the other side.

New Season of Creation

Daily Devotions beginning Sept. 1

Most of us know very little about the great web of life that surrounds us. Beginning on Sept. 1 and going through Oct. 4, the Province One EcoRegion will be offering daily devotions throughout the “Season of Creation” designed to open our eyes to some of the “created ones” with whom we share common ground. These devotions will highlight a different keystone species in our Province One EcoRegion each day, including a photo, a brief description, and thoughts on how the species reflects our image of God followed by a closing prayer. The devotions will be prepared by Episcopalians from around Province One.

Sign up to receive the devotions beginning on Sept. 1 via the link below.
