Care Pod Support for ICE-Affected Families
The Mercy Team has formed a second “Care Pod” - a circle of care and support - for an extended family of 13 in crisis in our region. We could use several other volunteers to assist. If you would like to have a major impact on the well-being of a family struggling with the recent detainment or deportation of a loved one, please come to the Forum on Feb 15th and consider volunteering to be part of the second Care Pod. Email Thea Kayne for more information.

February is Black History Month:
Natasha Trethewey is an American poet who served as United States Poet Laureate from 2012 to 2014. She won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her 2006 collection Native Guard and is a former Poet Laureate of Mississippi.
Natasha Trethewey’s poem “Southern History” (included below) draws upon her experience as a high school student in Mississippi during the early 1970s. Through vivid recollection, the poem invites readers to reflect on the way history is taught and remembered. Her message is particularly relevant today, as the progress achieved through the civil rights movement is torn asunder.
We offer this poem during the centennial celebration of Black History Month as a call to action, reminding the reader that the way we remember and teach history has real consequences for justice and equity in society.

Southern History
By Natasha Trethewey
Before the war, they were happy, he said.
quoting our textbook. (This was senior-year
history class.) The slaves were clothed, fed,
and better off under a master’s care.
I watched the words blur on the page. No one
raised a hand, disagreed. Not even me.
It was late; we still had Reconstruction
to cover before the test, and — luckily —
three hours of watching Gone with the Wind.
History, the teacher said, of the old South —
a true account of how things were back then.
On screen a slave stood big as life: big mouth,
bucked eyes, our textbook’s grinning proof — a lie
my teacher guarded. Silent, so did I.

Continued Need for Formula & Diapers
We are continuing to collect formula (Similac, please) and diapers (sizes 3 through 6) for Food Justice DMV, as well as size 3 and 6 diapers for our Care Pod family. Please drop them in the designated bins in the hallway. Thank you to all those diaper angels who have already donated!!!
