News And Events At Christ Episcopal Church - Somers Point, New Jersey
February 16, 2021
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Tomorrow, February 17, begins the holy Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. Lent is a time Christians spiritually unite themselves with Christ when he was led by the Spirit into the desert for prayer and to be tempted by the devil (Matt. 4:1-11). The Lenten Season is a forty-day period for us to reflect on our lives, ask God for help to make changes, and repent (to have a change of heart), and to be open for God’s love and forgiveness.

Ash Wednesday, the commencement of Lent, reminds us that we are mortal, and have a definite period before we enter eternity. Ashes traditionally used at the Ash Wednesday Service serves as a sacramental reminder of our mortality, as well as being an ancient sign of repentance; the King of Nineveh used ashes as a sign of repentance for his kingdom and ordered fasting (Jonah 3:3-8). For Episcopalians Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting (BCP 17) and the other weekdays of Lent and Holy Week are days observed by special acts of discipline and self-denial (BCP 17).

Due to COVID restrictions we will have only one Ash Wednesday Service tomorrow at 10:30am both in-person and live-streamed. We encourage our parishioners who cannot be with us in-person to join us spiritually and watch online, for Lent is a time to be united as a Christian body for both personal forgiveness and for the general forgiveness as a Church and a Nation by God, trusting in his Divine Mercy.

In Christ,

Father Justin
