Christ Is Present
Luke 24:13–35
The story of the road to Emmaus reminds us that the risen Jesus often shows up in ordinary places.
He comes alongside two disciples on a walk down the road. He joins their conversation. He listens to their sadness and confusion. He sits down with them at the table. And in the shared meal, in the blessing and breaking of bread, their eyes are opened, and they finally recognize Him.
This is one of the quiet gifts of the resurrection story. Jesus does not only appear in dramatic moments. He shows up in the ordinary. He is present in the walk, in the conversation, in the shared meal, in the everyday places where life unfolds.
At McCurdy Ministries, holy moments often look ordinary. A family walks into the Family Resource Center needing food, diapers, or help finding housing. Someone welcomes them without judgment. A pantry shelf is stocked. A child is offered a snack and a safe place after school. A grandparent raising their grandchildren finds support and understanding. In the newly created Soft Space, someone carrying grief is given room to breathe and be heard. These may seem like small moments, but they are not small to the people receiving them. In such ordinary acts of mercy and hospitality, Christ is present.
That means the question for us is not simply, “Where is God?” Rather it might be, “Where am I not paying attention to God?’
We can become so rushed, distracted, or discouraged that we miss the holy hidden in ordinary moments. We may overlook Christ walking beside us in a conversation, in a shared meal, in a quiet act of service, or in a place where someone is finally received with grace.
The Emmaus story invites us to pay attention. The risen Christ is often nearer than we know. He still meets us along the road, at the table, and in the ordinary rhythms of daily life.
Prayer: Risen Christ, open our eyes to see you in the ordinary moments of life. In our conversations, our shared tables, and our daily acts of care, help us pay attention to your presence. Amen.
