Morrisa and I enjoyed a vacation in Negril Jamaica last week. At one point there was a 100 degree temperature difference between Independence and Negril. It’s amazing how much can change from one airport runway to another. A traveler can take off from an airport that’s trying to keep the pipes from freezing and a few hours later land at an airport that’s trying to squeeze more cooling out of its air conditioner. One of the wonderful things about God’s creation is how different things can be at the same time on the same planet.

Taking a trip causes us to experience how different things can be in other parts of the world, but in reality we don’t have to travel very far to experience differences. From one driveway to another may be all the distance that separates a family who has enough heat from one who doesn’t. One driveway to another may be all the distance that separates a family who has enough food to eat from one who doesn’t. Down one driveway may live a family who are happy and safe and down the next driveway they suffer abuse.

We don’t always know what’s happening in the lives of the people around us. Wherever two or more are gathered one of them may be having a day that feels like warm sunshine and another person’s problems make it feel like record cold. Since we don’t know what people are dealing with, the best we can do is try to bring Christ’s love with us to warm things up. In the words of St. Teresa of Avila:

“Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which He looks compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which He blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are His body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”

On a different topic. This Sunday marks the retirement of Elaine Jackson. We will be recognizing her in a very special way during the traditional worship service. I encourage you to tune in this Sunday and share in recognizing her for her exceptional service to God through serving Christ United Methodist Church. In addition to the service there will also be a drive-by parade that day at 1:30. Cars will lineup in the parking lot of the Hobby Lobby near the Bass Pro Store and process from there past her home. Everyone is invited add your car to the retirement celebration parade.

Blessings,
Mike
