Message from Pastor Mike
I'm glad to be back from Puerto Rico. Last week, 19 of your sisters and brothers from Christ UMC were painting, cutting metal, troweling concrete, hanging metal roofs, and a variety of other work in the Puerto Rican heat. We had a marvelous time. There was plenty of good work to do and despite all that we accomplished, there is still much more to do. Mission groups will be going to Puerto Rico for years.
One of the preparations for this trip was for each of us to fill out a sheet for UMCOR that listed our skills. The purpose of the list was to match our group with a project that we already had experience doing. Our group had a variety of skills, but the skill that was common to all of us was painting. It was no surprise that most of us were sent to homes that needed paint.
In "The Acts of the Apostles" there is an obscure paragraph that describes how the Apostle Paul met Aquila and his wife Priscilla. Aquila and Priscilla were in Corinth because Emperor Claudius kicked all the Jews out of Rome. Paul was in Corinth because it was the next stop on his mission trip. It says, "Paul went to see them, and, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them, and they worked together - by trade they were tentmakers." (Acts 18:3) Paul didn't just preach on his missionary journeys, he also worked. He was a tentmaker. In Corinth he worked shoulder to shoulder with a couple who were displaced from their home in Rome. Working together in Corinth cemented their relationship. Having spent a year and a half making tents with Paul, some of Paul rubbed off on them. Later, Priscilla and Aquila traveled the Mediterranean world teaching and preaching the gospel.
We never know where our skills are going to take us and we don't know who we will be working shoulder to shoulder with. But, if we are willing to use our skills and talents in service to God, there's no limit to how God may use them to impact others. Likewise, there's no limit to how other's willingness to use their skills may impact you. The tentmaker working next to you may ignite a spiritual fire in you that takes you around the world.
What are your skills and how are you putting them to work for God?
