Christmas Amaryllis in July!

Nothing brings more joy, color and song to one's spirits than Amaryllis as winter's long, dark days approach~they are the art and soul of winter. Amaryllis are magical bulbs. Never underestimate the power of planting.

The Amaryllis harvesting season is underway in South Africa. Once our colleagues close the door on our container for its long voyage to us, we'll not be able to order more, so place your order now for holiday cheer from beautiful bulbs!

For Amaryllis to bloom in time for the holidays, you must select Christmas Flowering Amaryllis. Grown in the southern hemisphere, these Amaryllis are more eager to pop out of dormancy than those grown in the Netherlands. They may be potted in October for gorgeous flowers in just 4 to 6 weeks, right on time for the holidays!

Christmas Flowering Amaryllis Bulbs

Christmas Flowering Amaryllis are classified as Symphony, Sonata or Sonatini according to their flower size and height.

Symphony varieties are the largest, yielding big 6" to 8 3/4", saucer shaped flowers on 14" to 18" stems. Sonata Amaryllis yield slightly smaller 5" to 6" flowers on 14" to 16" stems. Sonatini Amaryllis are the most delicate, species-like varieties with 2 3/4" to 4" flowers on 12" to 14" stems.

Most bulbs yield two, and sometimes even three, successive flowering stems with multiple flowers. Sword-like foliage may appear before, during or after flowering.

Christmas Flowering Amaryllis have been bred to create large, well-proportioned plants from smaller bulbs. After harvest, they naturally shrink as they dry, and plump back up once they are potted and watered. We start shipping them in late September once we receive them from the annual harvest in South Africa.

Amaryllis Planting Tips
Prior to potting, store Christmas Flowering Amaryllis bulbs at 45°F to 54°F with good ventilation. The ideal humidity is around 65% for healthy and pliable roots. Colder temperatures could damage bud development; warmer temperatures could initiate sprouting and growth. The healthy outer skin of the bulb may appear papery, shriveled or rust-brown after having been washed and dried. It's all good, all natural.

Pot individual bulbs in well-draining, cozy pots in sterile, neutral pH potting soil with at least the top quarter of the bulb above the soil surface to avoid water collection in the sprout. A cozy pot means that there should be just an inch or so of space between the bulb and the pot: they love to be root bound. Tamp down the soil lightly.

Give it just one drink of room temperature water around the bulb base. Place the pot in direct sunlight with good air circulation, out of cold drafts, and in normal to low humidity. Do not water again until green growth appears.

Over-watering can stunt root, and therefore, plant development and growth. If the bulb is slow to wake up, apply bottom heat with a heating pad or food warmer, or place the pot over a radiator (never on a stove top.)

Double and Miniature varieties may pop out of dormancy more quickly than Single varieties. Once green growth appears, water evenly and consistently around the bulb base at soil level. Discard any overflow water in the pot saucer to prevent root or bulb rot. Never mist Amaryllis.

Brighter sunlight creates the best coloration and tends to keep plants shorter, more proportionate. It may need structural support for the huge flowering stems, and a top dressing of stones to prevent the pots from tipping over when the plant is in full bloom.

If the stems stretch too tall, cut them: Amaryllis are among the best and most long-lasting of cut flowers. Amaryllis vase life is longer in cooler ambient room temperatures (around 60°F). Stems can last up to two weeks! Click here for tips on how to carry them over from year to year.

Amaryllis Trouble Shooting
Stunted plants, flowers growing out of their necks and poor flower formation are caused by inadequate root development due to excessive watering prior to the initiation of top growth, nutrient-poor soil, improper storage, and by under or over watering during plant growth.

Sterile potting soil, good air ventilation, bright sunshine and moderate, soil-level watering helps prevent an airborne fungal disease known as Red Blotch or Red Fire. It causes red spots within the flesh of the flower stalks and leaves, and plant deformity. It is normally caused by growing conditions. Never mist Amaryllis.

South African and American agricultural inspectors are fastidious examining Amaryllis bulbs to make sure they're disease-free prior to export. The superficial rust-brown marks or red streaks that occur during the harvesting, washing and packaging processes have nothing to do with fungal disease.
