Christmas Magic

Mother Maddie

Before my family fell in love with church, we fell in love with the ballet. Our home was often full of Russian ballet dancers and choreographers whose bodies and minds seemed to accomplish the impossible. I was three years old the first time I watched them dance the Grand Pas De Deux in Act II of the Nutcracker. Sitting backstage under the prop table, my own costume itching my neck, the majesty of the moment enraptured me. Through the bright glare of stage lights, I watched the Prince lift the Sugar Plum over his head. I was too young to worry he might drop her. As far as I could tell, it was all pure magic.

I was ten years old when we first stumbled into an Episcopal Church, just old enough to begin to lose the wonder of Christmas. But behind the thick wooden doors of that neighborhood church, new mystery awaited. In chanted prayers and swinging smoke, I could feel that something mysterious was happening on the Altar, something tremendous that I could not yet name. My heart was stirred. I wanted nothing more than to get as close as I could to that glory.

That is the gift we hope to give you on Christmas. In the transcendent music, the stunning flowers, the beautiful vestments, we hope to open the eyes of your heart to ...

This Weekend & Week

We’re delighted to welcome the Rev. Michael Sturdy as our preacher this weekend.

Michael served on staff at Transfiguration and we sponsored him for ordination three years ago. Earlier this year he graduated from Sewanee and was ordained deacon. He now serves as Curate at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Houston, and he will be ordained a priest in January.

Michael will be joined by his wife, Lauren Sturdy, and their wonderful children.

Throughout history, the prophets helped the people of God hold onto hope and look for salvation: they spoke of a messiah who would bring release to captives, justice to the oppressed, and light to all trapped in darkness.

Join us this Sunday, December 21 at 10:15am in Roper Hall as we conclude this series with a discussion of the final great prophet, John the Baptaizer, and reflect on his summons to be ready for the arrival of the Lord.

As our guests for this class we welcome Deacon Michael Sturdy to join the conversation, along with several other wonderful guests: Fr. Terry Roper, Fr. Michael Merriman, Dr. Mark Stamm, and Danielle Shroyer.

Beginning this Saturday, December 20, you will notice work activity in and around the parking areas. A new allyway fence is being installed. No work will be done on Sunday but work will continue Monday and Tuesday to complete the project.

In addition to the fencing project, a crew will be re-striping the parking area doing work on the new driveway gate. The striping crew will be onsite Monday December 22 working in the section of parking to the northeast of the church entrance eastward to Hillcrest – basically, the front half of parking as you enter from Hillcrest. If you will be visiting the church during these times please be aware of this work.
