Dear Friends of Solidarity with South Sudan,

Many greetings from the Rome team and from all the 20 religious men and women currently present in South Sudan.


2022 is coming to an end. It is a year where the global news focused on the war, death and destruction in Ukraine, and the carry over effects on fuel and food costs internationally and especially in the developing world. In South Sudan we are experiencing these effects, along with the long-term consequences of climate change. Add to this the misery of continuing ‘sub national’ conflict and it is easy to fall into a prophecy of doom.

Pope Francis confirmed his visit to South Sudan


It's official, Pope Francis will be in South Sudan on 3 February 2023. The Press Office recently announced the dates of his trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan from 31 January to 5 February 2023. On his stop in Juba he will be accompanied by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The Annual General Assembly of Solidarity with South Sudan


On 1 December 2022, Solidarity with South Sudan held its annual meeting at the De La Salle Brothers' headquarters in Rome. Over 65 participants, representing 37 member congregations, were present, as well as a number of other congregations who are considering various types of engagement in South Sudan. The Irish and British ambassadors to the Holy See were also present.

Solidarity at the USG Assembly


Solidarity with South Sudan attended the 98th USG Assembly in Sacrofano, close to Rome. It was a great opportunity to meet the Superior Generals and speak about the mission in South Sudan. On the 24th November afternoon, Fr Jim Greene, the Solidarity Executive Director, spoke to the audience, together with Sr Pat Murray, the former Associate Executive Director in Rome, to raise the attention on the results reached together with the congregations and the donors and on the needs of this Country.

Bishop hands out diploma to primary school children

In August, the Solidarity Training Teacher College launched a new computer training course for primary school children of the neighbourhood. The first cycle was completed with 75 children receiving diplomas from the Bishop.
