Consecration Sunday Is Coming!

Dear Friends in Christ,

The clergy and Vestry of Christ Church New Haven believe that approaching financial stewardship from a biblical perspective can guide us to grow spiritually in our relationship with God as we support the church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of our incomes. The money that we give to Christ Church is not merely a way to pay the bills.

With these thoughts in mind, our Vestry has selected the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program to guide all of us in the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving. This program is based on the biblical philosophy of giving for spiritual development. We will not view stewardship like an obligation similar to dues to a club or organization.

Instead, we will approach members of Christ Church as followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. Consecration Sunday will encourage all of us toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?”

In masses throughout October, our Consecration Sunday Stewardship team will encourage and inspire your participation in Consecration Sunday events. During both masses on Consecration Sunday, October 25, we will ask you to make a financial commitment in Jesus’s name to the mission and ministry of Christ Church in this community and around the world.

Everyone who completes an Estimate of Giving Card will do so voluntarily on Consecration Sunday. During mass on Consecration Sunday, we'll share a brief period of inspiration and instruction, ending by inviting parishioners to make their commitments as a confidential act of worship.

We'll then join together for a Celebration Luncheon to give thanks for what God has given us--and for the ministries we share in Jesus's name in this place.

We urge you to attend Consecration Sunday and to join in the luncheon, even if you prefer not to complete a card. The procedure will take place in such a way that no one will feel uneasy should she or he choose not to fill out a card. There will not be home solicitation to ask people to complete cards.

If you do not live in New Haven or will be traveling on Consecration Sunday, you will have another opportunity to make your commitment.

Thank you, in advance, for your faithful participation in Consecration Sunday events. We look forward to this time of faithful reflection and prayer together--and towards discerning how God is calling us to share with the Church what God has given us.

Yours faithfully in Christ,

(the Rev'd) Stephen C. Holton
