“Just Thinking”

Happy New Year, 2024 is behind us and we are charging straight into 2025. As we repeat our resolutions and set our goals, it is a great time to reflect on some of the events that were 2024, but to remember some major events that are shrinking in the rear-view mirror.

2024 started out pretty rough with the 49ers brutal overtime loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 58. It was an election year and what a crazy roller coaster of a political season it was, the summer conventions and their intense political polarization leading to record voter turnout for a historic election. The Paris Summer Olympics was an amazing celebration of traditional sports with some new additions, like breakdancing, in which Aussie Rachael Gunn stole the show. 2024 was also a big year for the family, Tracy and I celebrated our 35th Anniversary in June, also in June we became grandparents to our happy and healthy Grandson, Beau. The Barberini’s had a good year in 2024.

Some milestones that stick in my mind from years gone by:

It’s been a quarter of a century since the Y2K scare. Leading up to the year 2000, there were concerns stemming from a technical issue in how computers stored dates. There were fears of banking and financial errors, including miscalculated interest rates or failed transactions. Failures in power grids, water systems, and other critical infrastructure. Disruptions to air traffic control and other transportation systems. Malfunctions in embedded systems, such as those in elevators, medical devices, or industrial machinery. Due to some frantic scrambling and preparations by the powers that be, when January 1, 2000, arrived, the feared disasters largely failed to materialize.

It’s been 24 years since September 11th, 2001, when the United States was brutally attacked and started the war on terror. Also, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and implementation of stricter airport screening protocols that are commonplace today.

Remembering the hype and build up to the pomp and circumstance surrounding the country’s bicentennial in 1976, It was a quite a display national pride and historical awareness. Next year we will be celebrating the country’s semi quincentennial, 250th anniversary, another landmark in our great nation’s history.

2010, 2012 & 2014 The Giants are World Series Champions.

1982, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1995 the 49ers are Super Bowl Champions.

1976, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022 Golden State Warriors are NBA Champions.

U.S. Presidents in my lifetime: Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden.

It’s been 35 years since the Loma Prieta Earthquake struck during Game 3 of the 1989 World Series between the Giants and the A’s at Candlestick Park. Northern California was decimated and the face of “The City” was changed forever. The World Series was postponed for 10 days, when the games resumed, the A’s behind their 2 all-star pitchers Dave Stewart and Bob Welch swept the Giants.

It's hard to believe when driving to the Caldecott Tunnel that the Oakland Firestorm was over 30 years ago in 1991, the devastation was incredible, but the recovery is even more incredible.

A new year, a good time for reflection, a good time to consider all that you are grateful for and a good time to get excited, because great things are instore for us in 2025.

Let me know what you think.

Why Owning a Home in 2025 is More Important Than Ever

As I sit at my kitchen table, sipping a steaming cup of mint herbal tea and reflecting on the past few years, one thing becomes abundantly clear: the concept of home has never been more significant. In a world full of uncertainties—economic upheavals, a global pandemic, inflation, and a housing crisis—the stability and security of owning a home stand out as pillars of resilience. Homeownership isn’t just a financial milestone; it’s a deeply personal achievement that provides a sense of place and permanence in an ever-changing world.

When I think about my own journey to homeownership, I’m reminded of how monumental it felt to sign the papers and hold the keys for the first time. It wasn’t just about owning a property; it was about owning my future. That moment symbolized years of hard work, planning, and sacrifice—a commitment not only to myself but to the legacy I hoped to build for my family.

The last few years have been a rollercoaster, with economic and social challenges that have tested the resilience of individuals and families alike. Against this backdrop, owning a home has become more than a financial aspiration; it is a critical pillar for navigating an uncertain future. For many Americans, homeownership represents not only stability and security but also an opportunity to build a lasting legacy.

In 2025, owning a home has taken on a whole new level of importance. From shielding against rising inflation to building generational wealth, the reasons to pursue homeownership are both urgent and compelling. Let’s explore ten reasons why owning a home today isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential for every American striving for stability, security, and prosperity.

Rising Cost of Rent: A Financial Drain with No Return

The cost of renting continues to skyrocket, leaving millions of Americans trapped in a cycle of financial instability. According to recent data, national rent averages have increased by over 30% in the past decade, with some cities seeing even sharper spikes. For many families, rent now consumes an unsustainable portion of their monthly income, leaving little room for savings or other essential expenses.

Renting provides no long-term financial benefits. Every monthly payment disappears into the landlord’s pocket, offering no return on investment. In contrast, a mortgage payment builds equity—a tangible asset that grows in value over time. Homeownership transforms monthly housing costs from a liability into an investment. When you own a home, you’re not just paying for shelter; you’re building your future.

I’ve personally experienced the frustration of renting. At one point, I calculated the total amount I would spend on rent over a decade, and the figure was staggering. That money could be used to pay down a mortgage or improve a property of my own. In 2025, the disparity between renting and owning is more apparent than ever. With rising rents outpacing wage growth, homeownership offers a crucial opportunity to break free from the financial constraints of renting and invest in a secure and prosperous future. The added benefit is the stability and predictability of a fixed mortgage payment, which helps families plan their budgets more effectively.
