Communion Statement

The Lord's Supper is celebrated here in the confession and glad confidence that our Lord, as He says, gives not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sin. In joyful obedience to the clear teaching of our Lord Jesus those are invited to His table who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. They show forth His death until He comes. Because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and so are unable to receive the Sacrament are invited to meditate on God's Word in the distribution hymns and pray for the day when divisions will have ceased. If you wish to receive communion in your pew, please inform an usher.

Church Membership

The elders are currently in the process of "cleaning up" the membership rolls to better reflect who actually belongs to St. Paul. If you are not in the habit of signing the attendance sheet, please do so! It makes our reports much easier to read.

Bay Circuit Convocation

All are invited to a special gathering of Bay Circuit Congregations at St. Paul Lutheran of Frankenlust on September 14th at 9:00 a.m. The speaker that day will be Samer “Sam” Makarios, an Arab Christian who has served as a guide in the Holy Land for 25 years. He was born in Jerusalem, where his father owns a small shop in the Christian Quarter of the Old City. Sam is in great demand as a tour guide for groups traveling to Israel, not only because of his first-hand knowledge of the Holy Land and its many sacred sites, but also because his vibrant faith in Jesus is an important part of the information he shares.

Sam’s presentation on the 14th will be in two parts:

  • Insights into the challenges of being a Christian in Israel, where Christians are about 1% of the total population. He will provide detail on how the current war in the Middle East has made life particularly difficult for Christians in Israel.
  • Sam will also share pictures and explanations of some of the Biblical sites in the Holy Land that pilgrims there are able to experience. His extensive knowledge of the Bible and his unique perspective as a life-long resident of Israel enables him to teach and inspire those who are privileged to hear him.

Sam’s presentation will be followed by a meal at noon provided by members of St. Paul, with expenses covered by a generous grant from our Michigan District Church Extension Fund.

Thank You

The 13th annual JME Memorial Run/Walk was a great success! We are sincerely grateful for the JME sponsors that made this event possible. Thank you to the Frankenlust Fire Department for ensuring our safety on the road.

Following the race, families enjoyed lawn games, concessions, face painting, a bounce house, and good old-fashioned fellowship. It was a chilly but beautiful day spent together. Our Dunk Tank Fundraiser, featuring St. Paul 8th graders, raised $558. A donation will be made to help offset the cost of the 7th & 8th grade kayaking trip in the spring.

A special thank you to Liz Begick for donating event beverages, Gary Behmlander for the delicious Italian Ice and cotton candy, and Principal Matyas for the face painting. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with the event, especially Eric Zielinski, Jeff Maul, Megan Kusterer, Drew Meylan, John and Lisa Schlicker, Chelsea Vermeesch, and the Matyas family. We could not have done this without you! – With appreciation from the Garcia and Glasser families

The Wellspring Child and Family Auxiliary

The Wellspring Child and Family Auxiliary will be having a meeting on Monday, September 30th, 2024. The meeting will be at Trinity Monitor Lutheran Church in Bay City, in their school and will begin at 6:00pm. There are many issues to discuss, the most important being the selection of a new Treasurer. We encourage all members to attend and look forward to seeing everyone and to share a time of fellowship and a cookie or two. Any questions call Kathy Colone at (989)671-9650.

Stewardship - An Act of Faith

Mark 9:24 – “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!’” Haven’t we often felt like this! And notice that Jesus does not throw the man out because of his weakness of faith: He still has pity, and He still blesses the man. But neither does Jesus leave people in weakness of faith. He blesses us and calls us to a deeper faith, as He did to the disciples in the boat on the storm-tossed sea. How does our faith grow? By hearing the Word of God. What does our faith lead to as it grows? A godly life lived in thanksgiving to our Lord.

Old Testament Reading

Isaiah 50:4–10

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.

Epistle

James 3:1–12

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

Holy Gospel

Mark 9:14–29

When they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to [Jesus] and greeted him. And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “If you can! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
