Communion Statement

The Lord's Supper is celebrated here in the confession and glad confidence that our Lord, as He says, gives not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sin. In joyful obedience to the clear teaching of our Lord Jesus those are invited to His table who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. They show forth His death until He comes. Because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and so are unable to receive the Sacrament are invited to meditate on God's Word in the distribution hymns and pray for the day when divisions will have ceased. If you wish to receive communion in your pew, please inform an usher.

Bay Circuit Convocation

All are invited to a special gathering of Bay Circuit Congregations at St. Paul Lutheran of Frankenlust on September 14th at 9:00 a.m. The speaker that day will be Samer “Sam” Makarios, an Arab Christian who has served as a guide in the Holy Land for 25 years. He was born in Jerusalem, where his father owns a small shop in the Christian Quarter of the Old City. Sam is in great demand as a tour guide for groups traveling to Israel, not only because of his first-hand knowledge of the Holy Land and its many sacred sites, but also because his vibrant faith in Jesus is an important part of the information he shares.

Sam’s presentation on the 14th will be in two parts:

  • Insights into the challenges of being a Christian in Israel, where Christians are about 1% of the total population. He will provide detail on how the current war in the Middle East has made life particularly difficult for Christians in Israel.
  • Sam will also share pictures and explanations of some of the Biblical sites in the Holy Land that pilgrims there are able to experience. His extensive knowledge of the Bible and his unique perspective as a life-long resident of Israel enables him to teach and inspire those who are privileged to hear him.

Sam’s presentation will be followed by a meal at noon provided by members of St. Paul, with expenses covered by a generous grant from our Michigan District Church Extension Fund.

NEW - St. Paul Jr. High Youth Group!

"St. Paul is excited to begin a Jr. High Youth Group led by Mr. and Mrs. Dave and Andrea Dent. Beginning Sunday, Sept. 8, students in 6th - 8th grade are welcome to join us every Sunday for donuts, devotions, and discussions between services from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. Our beginning topics will include bizarre, unusual, and just plain gross accounts found in the Bible. Additionally, the jr. high youth group will get together once a month on Sunday evenings for fellowship and fun. Look for details in the bulletin. Please keep the teachers and students in your prayers as we begin this new journey!"

Ladies Aid Meeting

The Ladies Aid meeting will be held on Monday, September 9th at 6:00 p.m. at Leaman's Green Applebarn in Freeland. Anyone wanting to carpool, please meet at church by 5:30 p.m. We will be touring the orchard and be able to shop in their store. Also, there will be an opportunity to sign up for the October Studio 154 meeting. Studio 154 will come to the Ministry Center if we have at least 15 people signed up. Come one, come all!

Stewardship - An Act of Faith

James 2:2 – “For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in ...” God shows no partiality: rich and poor alike are called into the kingdom. And both rich and poor alike have something to contribute to the kingdom in accordance with the callings God has given them in their lives. This is why both the Old and New Testaments talk about proportional giving — that is, giving a proportion of our income to the Lord’s work. This makes it possible for rich and poor alike to have the honor of supporting God’s work.

Old Testament Reading

Isaiah 35:4–7a

Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water.

Epistle

James 2:1–10, 14–18

My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. . . . What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

Holy Gospel

Mark 7:24–37

From there [Jesus] arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. But immediately a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone. Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
