Our Summer of Sewanee

Our summer worship continues in Sewanee for our 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services as we prepare the floors and our church for the organ installation in early 2026.

Be sure to grab a " Summer of Sewanee" bag tag this Sunday as we continue to enjoy our worship time in Sewanee Hall. See you in Sewanee!

Juneteenth

The History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. June 19, 1865, marks the date when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Grander, reached Galveston, Texas, with the announcement of the Civil War’s end, the abolition of slavery in Texas, and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the Confederate South. This news reached the enslaved two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and over two months after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. The 13th Amendment to the Constitution making slavery illegal in the United States would not be ratified until December 1865.

Juneteenth, also referred to as Freedom Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, has long been celebrated as a day of freedom in the African American community and marks our country’s second independence day. In 2021, Juneteenth was commemorated as a federal holiday for the first time.

Our beloved Holly Richards (pictured above last Sunday with Ceci Slesnick at coffee hour) will celebrate her 102nd birthday on Sunday, July 27th. We will have cake in her honor that day.

We would love to fill her mailbox with birthday cards in the coming weeks.

Organ Field Trip in November

We are busy making plans for an adult field trip to visit our organ at Schoenstein & Co in Benicia, California from November 12th-15th. Our time will include a trip to tour the factory and see our actual organ pipes, along with some good food and a winery or two.

If you are interested in learning more or being kept up to date as plans finalize, please email Christopher Harrell by clicking here.

Summer Adventures

Lon and Dale Dowlen are pictured above in beautiful Ireland

Don Slesnick III and Sebastian had a great week at Boy Scout camp in Northern Georgia.

Our music director Christopher Harrell is attending the Association of Anglican Musicians Conference in Cincinnati this week featuring liturgies and workshops for church musicians from Episcopal churches and cathedrals all over the country.

Brian Levey and Kay Seibert added to the festive feel of our worship in Sewanee Hall last week.

Congratulations to our Florida Panthers who added much joy and many late nights to these early summer days on their way to winning the Stanley Cup for the second year in a row. Fr. Tobin and Pam Lorenzo, both from our staff , are among the Panthers biggest fans! Pam and her husband Matt even attended the final game! Vamos Gatos!
