Growing Our Faith

Thinking About Earth and Creation

Earth Day - Wednesday - April 22

A Bible Parable as We Celebrate Earth Day

**********

Look closely at our picture.

  • What is the person kneeling on the ground doing?
  • What other things do you notice in the picture?

Listen to the picture's story

as told in The Peace Table Story Bible:

Jesus told the people a parable: "The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed-the smallest of all seeds. Someone digs into the rich soil of of a field, plants the seed, and waters it. The warm sun shines down.

The seed slowly grows and grows and grows. The roots spread deep and wide. The trunk grows thick and strong. Branches reach toward the sky. Leaves appear and yellow flowers blossom on the tips of the branches. The tiny seed becomes a great tree!

Then birds come from near and far - different colors, shapes and sizes. They build nests in the branches. Mother birds lay their eggs. They all sing together to welcome the baby birds."

Parent: Depending on your child's age you may want to explain what a parable is. Much of his teaching Jesus used parables.

A parable is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.

For most parables there is not just one way for them to be interpreted. He did not explain them after he told them even to his disciples.

Parent: Again, depending on your child's age you may want to explore what they think is "the lesson" in this parable called "The Parable of the Mustard Seed.

If this parable is about God's kingdom ask

  • I wonder why God's kingdom starts small..
  • Which part of a tree do you like best?
  • How many trees can you name?

Prayer:

Dear God many forest around the world are being cut down all at once. I ask that you help people to understand what a great gift trees are. If we do need to cut down a tree, help us to not waste them. Then may we appreciate the gift of trees and replant so there will always be enough trees for all you creatures. Amen

Upper Elementary-and older

Prayer: Thank You God for this amazing day: for leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes. Amen

Soil

Jesus told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, "See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil? He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it.'"

Luke 13:7-8

Everything I have I earned. Everything I've achieved is down to my hard work and nobody else's. If you've failed, it's because you're a failure. You didn't grind hard enough, don't have enough grit. Spent too much on lattes.

This is some people's line, isn't it?

It's nice for them, because it absolves them of a lot of responsibility. The responsibility to thank or acknowledge the world for the aid, privilege, boost that they receive. The responsibility to aid, privilege boot others.

Against this nonsense Jesus preaches this parable. The vineyard owner, a rugged individualist, an up-by-your-bootstraps kind of guy, has given this tree three years to produce something, and it hasn't. Three strikes, and it's out. The gardener, an arborist, however, knows that fruit production is about much more than the abilities of one tree. It's about all sorts of matrices and factors: water, light, pollinators, and of course, the structural and chemical health of the soil.

The individual (the plant) is only half of the equation. The arborist knows that the place where the tree is planted is just as important to its flowering as the tree itself.

The rugged individualist doesn't touch the tree for three years and then says, "Cut it down." God the arborist says, "Not till we see how it does in my kind of soil."

Prayer

Thank you God, for all the gardens and all the gardeners who have helped me thrive. Amen

Poetry a Gift to Consider:

Chosen for Eastertide and Earth Day

The Morning Tree

by Luci Shaw

published in The Christian Century

This early morning's double vision: the generous

span of the sky flung open, and over to the west

a full moon setting, her cool silver lip almost

disappearing behind the islands, just as

the sun is uprising in the east, spreading his gold

with a warm and benevolent hand. Light greeting light,

in this double vision, heavenly bodies circling on

the dance floor of our planet, beams from the celectial

couple touching with brilliance every tree, field,

lake, island, ocean. Even our little dogwood,

her blossoms already a saturated pink, glows brighter

to star the day, asking us, What creative gifts

do you have to offer us, this radiant morning?

Luci Shaw (1928 - 2025) wrote more than 30 books of poetry and creative nonfiction.

. . care for the soil around trees and other things you planted. It will make all the difference.
