Dear Christ Memorial Ohana, 

It is the time of year for our Stewardship Campaign when we give special thought to our gifts of time, talents and treasure.  

Our alter guild, lay eucharistic ministers, readers, musicians, technical support team, graveside foster families, property beautification team, administrative support, Helen Mitsui Shared Blessings Thrift Shop employees and volunteers, outreach service providers and Bishop’s Committee contribute many hours of service to our church and our community. Thank you to everyone who serves CMEC in so many meaningful ways. We are blessed by your love and commitment to our church.  

If you are not already volunteering and are interested in sharing your time and talents in any of our ministries please let us know. We would love to have you join us.  

During this time of year we are also asked to consider how we can financially support CMEC. Our financial support allows us to continue to be a light in our community. Thank you for prayerfully considering financial stewardship in 2023. Engaging the Word: Approaching the Bible with skepticism and devotion  

November 3 to December 15 

Join us on Thursday mornings at 9 AM on zoom as we explore the Book that is at the heart of our Judeo-Christian heritage and the center of our Anglican tripod of “Scripture, Tradition, and Reason.” Why do we read the Bible? What has been and is the role of interpretation? Do different translations lead to different understandings? Does the Bible have anything to do with my actions, ethics, and politics in the world today?  

We will consider these and other questions in three sessions, then take a break on Thanksgiving Day, and return to look at the Gospel of Mark, the oldest (and shortest) of the four canonical gospels to see how this early Christian writer influences our understanding of how God works in our lives right now.

All Saints’ Sunday is a time when we not only remember the heroes and heroines of the faith, but also those who have been saints in our own lives: parents, friends, coaches, mentors.

It is an opportunity to remember how important they have been and how their lives have influenced our own. If you would like to include the name of someone in the Prayers of the People on November 6, please email Sarah at christmemorialkilauea@gmail.com

We have begun the process of refining our search for a new vicar. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this important journey.

A prayer for transition:

Almighty God, look graciously on the people of Christ Memorial Episcopal Church. Be with us and lead us as we seek a priest for our church. We ask your direction and guidance for those who shall recommend and choose our new spiritual leader, that we may receive a faithful pastor who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries. Grant us perception, faithfulness, patience and joy, so that we may hear your voice in all our deliberations. Grant us also the desire and the ability to truly hear each other and those who have entrusted us with this process. Give us courage to respond and act as you lead us. We pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Halloween is right around the corner and the Helen Mitsui Shared Blessings Thrift Shop is ready! We have lots of costumes and all kinds of Halloween and fall decorations for sale at very reasonable prices.  We look forward supplying you with all your Halloween needs and desires!

About 800 people visit our shop each week for essential items as well as treasures.  A big thank you to our customers as well as our volunteers who are all working together to keep useable merchandise out of our landfill.  A special thank you to our community who makes our shop one of the most popular on the island!

The soul sails high on the wings of God and angels bright

Community, friendship, honor, love and will come right

When so expanded, as the soaring soul seeks Light.

The mind that lies forgotten on the quaking ground,

Now comes forth in wisdom, warrior unbound.

The mind sees the Pattern that broadcast brilliant stars abroad

And how that Pattern works (although our souls are flawed)

Within our souls; the single, simple, perfect Law.

But if the soul had not become so strong and good

The mind would have given up, before it understood.

So God guides souls towards the shining Source of Light

And from the soul-engulfing memory of that flight

The mind awakens from its dark and ignorant plight.

We turn our vision at last up from the created sod,

That cries for care, up to the Creator Light of God.

Our goal is to provide our community with reasonably priced, quality merchandise. We will reuse, repurpose and recycle goods and keep as much as possible out of the landfill in an effort to help Kauai and our planet toward Zero Waste.
