16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing
one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with
thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed,
do everything in the name
of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.
It's embarrassing to admit how long it took me as a Christian to appreciate congregational singing. For many years, congregational singing was something I simply "put up with." I didn't mind it, exactly. But it felt dispensable to me. Many things contributed to a change of heart and mind (too many for the purposes of this short letter). But one major domino that fell in the right direction was the domino of Colossians 3:16. I was all aboard the "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly" train. As an enthusiastic reader and eager student I was all about the "word" part. Get to the teaching! Get to the preaching! But then I noticed the fullness of what Paul was saying. In the second half of v. 16 he actually says, ONE WAY that the word dwells in you is through the singing of "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs."
Not only this, but this singing of God's word was done not only for the praise of God, not only for my own edification, but also for the "teaching and admonishing of one another"! So, I stopped disrespecting the Lord and embraced the singing as one way I am commanded to admonish my brothers and sisters in Christ. This is one reason I like the way our building is set up. Each morning, if I know the song well, I can glance across the room and enjoy the sight of fellow Christians singing to God and to one another.
Let's prepare our hearts this weekend for the "dwelling" of Christ's word in his people through singing. Glance at one another in appreciation. Listen to what the songs teach you about the Lord and one another. Look forward to the Lord's Day so that when we gather, we can be built up for life and godliness in this world!
Worship Gathering Plans
We will continue to gather in person for worship at Discovery church this Sunday at 10:30AM. We continue have overflow available in the fellowship/Gathering Grounds side of our building. We have a hard-line connection to the TV in the fellowship area where the service can be viewed if you want to be present but would also like a little more physical distance than the worship center provides. The Live-stream will also be available.
*NURSERY is NOW AVAILABLE:
This Sunday our nursery will be open and staffed during the morning worship service. Our volunteers will continue to abide by safe and sanitary procedures when caring for all the children in the nursery.
Pastoral Staff Search Begins August 6th
After much prayer, discussion and waiting the elders will begin the search for an additional pastor to join the Discovery church body. Biblically and constitutionally this responsibility is on the elders' shoulders but we have asked three members of the congregation to join us in the search. So, be in prayer for Peg Wittmeier, Dan Mason and Mary Holdahl as we take our first steps. Our vision at this time is to work toward calling a man who is a qualified elder/pastor according to 1 Timothy 3:1-17 (see also: Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4) and can particularly focus on youth and children's ministries.
Graduate Card Shower/Fellowship, Sunday August 9th, 10:00 AM
This is a chance to fellowship with any of our graduates that are available and to show them some love and support. There will be an opportunity to shower them with gifts and cards as they prepare for their next steps. Also, we'll pray for them in the service and present them with a gift of love from the church as a whole. Mark it on your calendar and plan to join us! Our graduates this year are: Cassie Bates, Hailey Reisner, Megan Highland, Elizabeth Dodge and Jailyn Story.
