This Sunday's Sermon and Song List
This week we're continuing in our new series "New and Different: The Letter of 1 Peter". The text for Sunday is 1 Peter 2:11-25. Peter has reminded us of the unique identity we have as Christians. He reminds us that we are: born again, a spiritual house where God dwells, a holy priesthood, and a chosen race. Now Peter is concerned that our special identity influences our conduct in the world. Rather than being puffed up over our rights and privileges Peter calls us to be humble toward everyone and consider every relationship an opportunity to reflect the character of Christ.

Before coming to church PLEASE REMEMBER:
  • If you are sick or experiencing any symptoms please do not come to church. Use caution and seek medical advice instead.
  • If you are in a high-risk category (e.g., compromised immune system, etc.) consult a medical professional that you trust to help make the right decision for you when it comes to public exposure. 
  • Don't feel pressured to be back in church or volunteering as usual if you're not ready. If you're wondering how to make a decision about when to get back into a church routine, seek advice from trusted brothers/sisters in Christ, wisdom from God's word, and listen to your conscience.
  • Remember that masks are available in the church building if you want one. We will not bind the conscience when it comes to masks but we are happy to provide them for any and all that would like one.      
New Sunday School Class starts this Sunday: Getting to the Heart of Parenting
Even if you're not a parent yet, or even if you're still waiting for that first grandkid, this study can benefit you. Even if you think parenting will never be in your future, this might be a valuable tool in your belt that you can use to support other parents in the church. 
Here's the official description of the class:
"Parenting is hard, but there are few things in life that rise to this level of importance. God has chosen parents to be primary instruments in the shaping of a human soul. Join pastor and best-selling author Dr. Paul David Tripp on a 10 session journey through the Bible to discover a different and better way to parent. After laying down foundational parenting principles, Tripp covers specific application for children 0-5, 6-12, and 13-18."
This class begins this Sunday, February 14th, 9:00AM on the Gathering Grounds Side of the building. We request that all participants enter the building through the coffee shop entrances so that worship center entrances are reserved for participants of the mask required service. Thank you!

No "Facebook" February: Our Social Media Fast
That's right! We're encouraging our church to take a break from social media this month. At least take a break on Monday through Saturday (of course we want you to use it on Sunday to stream the service if you can't be here in person!). 
Now, have we lost our minds? How can anyone think it's actually a good idea to take a break from social media with everyone so distanced from each other? Don't they realize it's how we stay "connected"? I know it might sound odd to those of us who like our social media. And, of course, there's no pressure to join us in or social media fast this month. But here are some ways that it could help you. 
  • First: Fasting is the idea that we give up one thing to focus on another. So, rather than using Facebook to feel connected to people try a phone call, video chat, a text, or even reaching out to another person in the church or in your neighborhood for a face to face meeting if you're both comfortable with it.
  • Second: Fasting also comes with prayer. With a food fast the idea is that you abstain from food in order to use your meal time for prayer. Think about it: how many times do you check social media? What if everytime you wanted to check social media you prayed for someone in the church instead? Think of how many more people would be prayed about if we did that!
  • Third: Think about what it could do for your anxiety! There's something about social media that makes us "hyper-aware". No one is saying that there aren't some good things about social media. But the hyper-awareness that comes from social media can tend to make us fret about things we can't control and, maybe even some things that are never going to affect us anyway. 
Speaking for myself (Cory) personally, I've deleted Facebook from my phone so that I'm not constantly checking it and I find myself a lot less irritated and distracted. Obviously, many of us are not tempted by social media. And we praise God for that! But for many of us, we can be all too easily allured by the "eye-candy" of the screen and the thrill of social media notifications. If that's you, consider what the Lord may do with some regular breaks from the screen this month.. 
*NURSERY and CHILDREN'S CHURCH NOW AVAILABLE! Both nursery and Children's Church volunteers will continue to abide by safe and sanitary procedures when caring for all the children in their care.
Women's Prayer Meetings
Prayer, prayer and more prayer. All women are encouraged to participate in our prayer time February 18, Thursday, at 7:00 PM. We will meet in the Women's Ministry area and will dedicate our time to prayer for individuals, our church, our city and area, our state, and our nation. We plan to meet for prayer every first Thursday at 2:00 PM and third Thursdays at 7:00 PM throughout 2021. Please join us!
DISCOVERY ZONE SPOTLIGHT
Everyone is welcome to join us each Wednesday at 5:45 PM for pizza with classes that follow at 6:30!

Wednesday Night Adult Study: Hosea 
The adult class on Wednesday nights beginning an 8 Part Study in Hosea that will focus particularly on God's love for his people. "Hosea is about the love we all want, and the love we all need." God's words to his people in Hosea are "surprising, raw, emotional, at times uncomfortable, but always compelling." 

Grades 7-12: will continue to meet upstairs and study the adventures in the book of Judges.

Mask Required Service MOVING to Sunday Morning at 9:00AM, Starting February 14th. Teaching Series for this service will be: End-Times Basics


After several weeks of our afternoon service we concluded that it is far more convenient for anyone that desires a masked gathering to attend in the morning. Initially we weren't sure how to squeeze it in to Sunday morning without demanding too much of our amazing volunteers. But after some discussion and prayer we think we can manage a simplified, mask enforced gathering in the worship center from 9:00 to 10:00 on Sunday mornings. Here's what to expect, beginning on February 14th:
  • The worship team will lead us in a song together
  • This will be followed by announcements and prayer
  • Pastor Cory will teach/preach a four week series on End-Times Basics
  • We will require anyone who intends to remain in the worship center to wear a mask during this hour
  • We will ask those who attend this hour to please enter the worship center through the South or North doors (not the coffee shop entrances).
  • We also ask that those who will attend our usual Sunday school class on the Gathering Grounds side use the Coffee Shop entrances. 
  • We'll evaluate each month whether or not to continue with this format

Pastor of Family Ministry Candidate: Brandon Pedersen
We are pleased to report that our search team has extended an invitation to Brandon Pedersen to be our candidate for our Pastor of Family Ministry Pastor. Our team believes that Brandon is the man that God is calling to this position and couldn't be more excited to get you more acquainted with him.

Saturday, February 20th
9:00 AM—Meet with Sunday school teachers (nursery to 6th grade) & Children’s Church Leaders 
10:30 AM— Meet with Discovery Zone Teachers and Volunteers
1:00 PM—Parents Q&A
 
3:30 PM - Meeting with Elders and Board of Directors
 
*All Meetings from 9:00 to 3:30 will take place in the Worship Center
 
5:00 PM—All Church Pizza Night—Come and meet Pastor Brandon and family:
  • Informal fellowship time
  • Brandon shares his testimony, call to ministry
  • Open Q&A time 
  • Any middle and high school students who attend will get time with Brandon after supper

9:00 AM—Sunday School - Brandon shares with and takes questions from youth (grades 7-12) 
10:30 AM—Worship Service with Pastor Brandon preaching

Sunday, February 28th
Immediately following the worship service will be a congregational meeting. There will be discussion and a possible vote on a recommendation from the Pastor Search Team to extend a call to Brandon Pedersen as Pastor of Family Ministry at Discovery Church. 
 
According to our Constitution only covenant members may vote. If you are a covenant member at Discovery Church and are unable to attend the February 28th congregational meeting you may vote prior to February 28th via absentee ballot available at the church office. Ballots can also be mailed by request.
 
We are inviting this man to come, meet the church, and be examined by the congregation so that we can make our final decision about calling him to this position. We are planning a candidating weekend to take place on FEBRUARY 20th and 21st. Please see HERE for complete itinerary for the process.
LAST WEEK to Drop off your change for the Baby Bottle Boomerang!

Bring your baby bottles full of change/cash/checks to support the life-saving work of Missouri Valley Pregnancy Resource Center THIS SUNDAY, February 14th. Please also use your baby bottle as a reminder to pray for abortion vulnerable women, single mothers, and families in need within the Yankton community.
Immediately following our worship service, those whose schedule allows, will gather for prayer. This Sunday we will be praying for the pro-life centers in the area and for those considering abortion and the doctors and staff performing those abortions.
Here are all the study/fellowship opportunities currently available through our church:
  • Monday Morning Men's Group (6:45 AM at Fryn' Pan)
  • Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study in Hosea at 6:30PM at Discovery Church. Childcare available. Zoom will also continue to be available.
  • Men's Thursday Noon Bible Study (In-person at Discovery Church - bring a lunch if you like).
  • Women's Thursday morning at 9:00 AM will meet this week. We will be discussing day 1-3, Session 4 of "Everyday Theology by Mary Wiley. Child care available.
