Discovery Church Update
Church Schedule Update
May 22, 2020

Brothers and Sisters,
Let me fill you in up-front as to what's in this update. After some Scripture there are updates on:
  • In-person worship gatherings at Discovery
  • Available online content
  • New Wednesday Bible Study
  • Kitch family moving plans
I was thinking this week about the story of the famously fretful Martha in Luke 10:41. As Martha busies herself with many things and frets over her sister's refusal to join her in her fretfulness Jesus turns to her and says,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion,
which will not be taken away from her.”

I did a little digging and found that the word "anxious" that Jesus uses literally means, "divided into parts." In other words, being anxious is what is happening when you "fall to pieces". We are living in anxious times, are we not? The world sure gives us lots of reasons to fret...and we see many examples in the Bible of godly people who struggled with anxiety and sorrow (Psalm 42).

I am thankful that in anxious times (and when my own soul is tortured) God has given us the one necessary thing: Himself in Christ. In Christ we have God revealed, God spoken, God with us, God in us, and God for us.

Romans 8:37-39
"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Now for our update...

In-person Worship Gatherings at Discovery
We will continue to gather in person for worship at Discovery church this Sunday at 10:30AM. We will continue to exercise precautions in light of current concerns regarding coronavirus. We've taped off every other row to create distance. Cleanliness and hygiene standards remain strict and we'll continue simplifying the service to minimize other risks as well.
As elders we want everyone to know there is NO PRESSURE to attend or volunteer at this time if you want to minimize any risk. We want each believer to follow their conscience. Be praying in the mean time for the Lord to bring us all back together soon!

Available Online Content:
We continue to experience some glitches with the Live-stream audio. We believe we have figured out the problem but it required us to order a new piece of equipment. Because of worldwide shipping delays caused by the coronavirus response we will have to wait a couple more weeks before our streaming issues are resolved. So, the plan at this point is to record the service and upload the video to Youtube and Facebook by the afternoon on Sunday. Or, you can sit in the fellowship area and listen to the worship service. If you are looking for a solid sermon to listen to at the usual 10:30 worship time, consider checking out  this famous one , delivered twenty years ago, that is still bearing fruit in people's lives today. Pray for the diligent volunteers that are working on our live-streaming issue so our body can continue to be edifying by streaming the preaching and worship.

In addition, I (Pastor Cory) will continue to hop on Facebook Live on Fridays at noon for a quick devotion and "hang out" time. This just provides one more way to reach out with encouragement through online technology.

Let me especially highlight that we are starting a new Wednesday night study in the book of Judges. We also decided to mix it up by hosting it at the new Kitch house. Here are all the Bible studies currently available through our church:

  • Women's Bible Study at 5:30PM on Thursdays (on ZOOM only)
  • Wednesday Night Bible Study in Judges at 6:30PM. This study is In person at the Kitch house (903 E. 19th) and on ZOOM

Kitch Family Moving Plans
We are moving from 1100 W. 11th to 903 E. 19th this Saturday morning (May 23rd)! We are so excited to not only call Yankton home but to transition into a house of our own that we can share with others. Did you know that aside from Bible reading and prayer, helping your friends move is one of the ways God likes to sanctify his people? It's true. Well, ok...maybe I'm stretching that a bit. In any case, if you want to help us (we already have ALOT done) we're starting at 1100 W. 11th at 8:30AM. Lunch will be served at the new house for anyone who wants to help out.

May the peace of God be with you all. Amen (Romans 15:33).

Grace and peace,
Pastor Cory
