Dear Church School Friends,

How long does it take a tree to grow? Particularly a fig tree?

While I certainly can't say for sure, I remember planting a tree in my childhood home's front yard as a child and watching it steadily overtake me. Still, at first, it seemed to grow so slowly!

This Sunday's Gospel includes the story of a fig tree that has not brought forth any fruit and so the owner of the vineyard where it was planted ordered it to be cut down until the gardener intervened. Give me a year, the gardener said.

A year to tend, to fertilize and weed and prune and watch. It takes time for good things to grow – a lesson for all parts of our lives, a parable against hurry, that teaches us how to nurture those traits we want rather than throwing up our hands and walking away instead of giving that growth time.

Primary Godly Play (PreK-Gr.3): The Greatest Parable (pt. 2-3)

In this week's segment of The Greatest Parable – the stories of Jesus *with* people, the story that is bigger than anything else in our Church School room – we encounter Jesus deeply enmeshed in community. He teaches in the synagogue, calls disciples to him, and speaks to and feeds great crowds, including women and children. He has so much he wants to say to us.

The art shown here is not the art from our story, but it is by the same artist, Vicki Shuck, a native American artist, in her same distinctive style, and it is a particularly evocative scene of Jesus's welcome to children. When Jesus feeds the 5000, a story included in this week's sequence, that is only a count of the men! Imagine how many women and children his life and works nourished as well.

Mission Trip Opportunity with Carter Methodist Church this Summer

Youth from Christ Episcopal Church have previously joined young people and adults from our neighbors at Carter Methodist Church on their summer trip serving with United Methodist Economic Ministries and have had a great time serving alongside our neighbors. They'll be returning to Salem, Maine this summer June 22-27. We'll pass on more information from Timothy John, their Children's & Youth Ministry Director shortly! We hope you'll consider joining them!

To register for this trip, please fill out the form at this link and then email Bird for the full registration packet to be returned to Timothy at Carter UMC. The deadline for registration is April 30th.

What are we doing this Lent to cultivate our faith? Here's what's on deck in this season -

  • Lent Madness: Make sure you're tracking the Lent Madness match-ups and let us know how you voted this Sunday when we update our parish bracket!
  • Lent Gratitude Challenge! Focus your attention on all of the blessings in your life. Sign-up with Nick here and get supplemental reminders from United Thank Offering. Still want more? There's also a podcast!
  • Go deeper in prayer with Bedtime Chapel! Bedtime Chapel offers a five minute, lectionary-based evening prayer service designed for families. There's also a supplemental weekly Bible Study for adults. (I'm the Bible Study conversation partner beginning this week and through most of Lent!)

Coming After Easter! Connect With Prayer Partners (Sunday April 27)

Sparrow, seen in the image here, is a little bird who loves to pray – but one day he can't find his words! Turning to his friends for help, Sparrow learns that they don't all pray with words at all. Instead, they pray with art, dance, baking, and sharing.

It is with an embrace of both the importance of prayer and the diversity of its forms that we are preparing to launch our Prayer Partners program, in conjunction with the Prayer Response Ministry here at Christ Church. We hope people of all generations will come together to pray for each other, our community, and the world in all the forms prayer can take. Stay tuned for more details!
