Rector's Note

Annual Meeting is coming very soon! We will meet after the 10:30 service on Sunday June 7, to hear reports of the parish and elect new vestry members.

The nominees for the next vestry class are: Bob Allen, Jim Buehler, Erin Horvat, and Victoria Sicks (second term). Victoria is eligible for another term because she only served for one year, finishing the term of another member. She was not part of the discussion of nominees.

If you would like to be added to the slate as a petition candidate, you need to submit your name with ten signatures of members supporting you to our secretary, Lorraine Webb, vestrysecretary@stmartinec. The deadline is Wednesday June 3.

Many thanks to the outgoing vestry class, Carolyn Green, Kelly Martin, Lydia Ogden, and Victoria Sicks, and the rest of the nominating committee, Carol Duncan and Pam Prell!

I am grateful for these nominees, who have accepted the call to serve the St Martin’s community in this way.

For others who are looking to deepen their relationship with St Martin’s, or just learn more about what is happening here, there will be a Ministry Fair on the same day as the Annual Meeting, Sunday, June 7, from 9 to 10:15. We will have just two services that day, 8 and 10:30, to allow for everyone to be at the Fair. Representatives from the many ministries at St Martin’s will be at tables, ready to answer questions and welcome anyone who is interested in joining that ministry.

It will be a fun and informative day, showing off all we do and all we are, as we anticipate the end of regular programming and the beginning of summer.

Guatemala Student Scholarship Fundraising Campaign 2026

St. Martin’s Guatemala Companion Parish Committee will be collecting pledges for the 2027 San Juan Apostol and Totonicapán Scholarship Funds from Sunday, May 24th through Sunday, June 21st.

Our parishioner’s generosity has enabled scholarship programs in Chichicastenango and Totonicapán in the Western Highland parishes of San Juan Apostol and San Martin Obispo de Tours. The Reverend Alvaro Fidel Miranda Velasquez manages the scholarship programs in both communities. Scholarship programs are critically important in Guatemala because they enable children to go to school and have a chance of breaking the cycle of poverty. They are important for another reason as well: education gives students and their families hope for the future and happiness in the present as they pursue that education in their own community.

In 2025 St. Martin’s parishioners generously pledged and donated over $22,000 to support young learners otherwise unable to attend school due to economic hardships. The annual awards of $550 per student support tuition, uniforms and healthy nutrition for students and provide families with hope for bright futures. The young people we sponsor and their families are so very thankful for our support.

This year our goal is $15,000. Please consider pledging a contribution to this scholarship fund for the 2027 school year in Guatemala. Pledges beginning at $25 dollars can be made. A full scholarship for a student is $550. Committee members will be available at the end of all services with clip boards for you to sign up or you can contribute directly online or via the plate. Contributions of pledged funds are expected to be paid on or before September 30th. Thank you for your continued support for these children and their families!

Sermon

The Rev. Dr. Mary Barber

May 24, 2026 - The Day of Pentecost

In recent years, there have been many studies, reports, books and articles, about the nones. Nones meaning the religiously unaffiliated, the NONEs, the people who when asked to check off a box for their religious identity, check “none.” There has been much wondering, and hand-wringing about these nones, because church attendance has been going down since the 1960’s, and how are we gonna attract these folks back into our pews?
