Rector's Note

This Wednesday, staff had a retreat at St Paul’s. We reviewed the past program year, and started working on next year’s calendar. We went over the list of projects we aspired to tackle at last year’s retreat, and found we had accomplished many of them -- some very large! Quite a few of these projects were joint staff and volunteer efforts. And of course, this list is not exhaustive or inclusive of all we have done as a church community. Continue reading here.

You're Invited to the Ordination of Anne Alexis Harra

This Saturday, June 27th

10:00 a.m. at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral

Anne Alexis Harra will be ordained as a transitional deacon this Saturday June 27th at 10:00am at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral (19 S 38th St). This means that God-willing, she will be ordained a priest about six months after.

About Anne Alexis:

Anne Alexis Harra is a cradle Episcopalian and has spent her whole life in the church. She graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary this past May with her Master's in Divinity. She was sponsored for ordination by St. Martin's, and formerly served as our lay Children, Youth & Family Minister. While at VTS, she served as a sacristan in the chapel department, and had the honor of serving as the seminarian at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Burke, VA. Anne Alexis has accepted a call as Assistant Rector at St. David's, Radnor, and she will begin this new season of ministry on July 1. She is immensely grateful to spend her first Sunday as an ordained person with St. Martin's. When she is not "churching," you can find Rev. Anne Alexis at the gym, cheering for her beloved Philly sports teams, or tending to her plants.

If you would like to contribute to a purse gift for Anne Alexis, you can do so by:

  • Writing a check to St. Martin's with "Anne Alexis’ Purse" in the memo line
  • Clicking here to go to the Giving page of St. Martin's website. Click the "Give Now" button. Under the "Select a Fund" drop down menu, select "Purse Gifts" and put "Anne Alexis’ Purse" in memo line.

Take Action

Muchas Gracias, St. Martin’s!

Thank you for your generous pledges for the 2027 Chichicastenango and Totonicapán Scholarship Funds. As of Sunday, June 14th, our pledged total was $18,235. We have exceeded our goal of $15,000 in pledges.

The Guatemala Companion Parish Committee is very grateful for your fabulous support of these deserving children and their families. We will be able to fully fund the scholarship programs for 2027.

The Committee will no longer be collecting pledges after Sunday services. However, anyone, who still would like to make a pledge can do so by contacting Sandy Abrams (sandy.abrams55@gmail.com).

Contributions of pledged funds or direct giving can be paid on or before September 30th with a check via the plate with a memo to indicate “for Guatemala Scholarships” or online, using the St. Martin’s website and choosing “Guatemala Scholarships” from the drop down list. Your good works will be contributing to the futures of these children and families for years to come!

Sermon

The Rev. Dr. Mary Barber

June 21, 2026

This Friday was Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when a Union Army general arrived in Galveston, Texas, to read aloud the proclamation that “All slaves are free.”

All slaves are free. Now most of the people hearing the announcement already knew that the Civil War had ended. They also knew that two years earlier, Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Some folks listening had in fact fled to this remote part of the country in the final weeks and days of the war, taking their enslaved adults and children with them, in order to evade the law and keep their free labor for as long as possible.
