Ministry Transition: The Rev. Luke Selles
From the Rev. Dr. Mary Barber:
For the past nearly two years, Rev. Luke has been serving with grace and skill in the role of Associate for Children, Youth, and Families. The churchy term for Luke’s position is a “curacy,” the first call or “cure” of a new priest after ordination. It is usually expected that a curacy will be temporary, typically two years, and that the person will move on to a new step in their priestly ministry and formation.
| | |
Luke is coming to that point of transition in the next few months, and is discerning what comes next for them. I have started looking for a new CYF Associate so that we can have a new priest by the time Luke goes to their next call.
In the coming months, Luke and I will keep you informed as we know more news. There will of course be time to celebrate all that Luke has done for CYF ministry and for. St Martin’s. Continue reading here.

Summer Bible Series: The Parables of Jesus
Sundays, July 12th - Aug 16th
Between the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services
All ages are invited to encounter the parables of Jesus -- those elusive, challenging, and deceptively simple stories with imagery from everyday life, which teach something about spiritual realities -- with a story told using Godly Play followed by a collective activity led by members of St. Martin's community that corresponds to the story (i.e. singing, planting, baking). If you have a skill you'd like to teach related to one of the following stories, email Rev. Luke at lselles@stmartinec.org.
| |
- July 12: “The Good Shepherd” (John 10:1-18)
- July 19: “The Good Samaritan” (Luke 10:25-37)
- July 26: “The Pearl of Great Price” (Matt 13:45-6)
- August 2: “The Mustard Seed” (Mark 4:30-2)
- August 9: “The Sower” (Matt 13:1-23)
- August 16: “The Leaven” (Luke 13:20-1)
Alongside this learning, Rev. Luke will lead a Bible study on the Parables using Amy Jill Levine's Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi: a slim and accessible book, in which Levine reconstructs how Jesus' original first-century Jewish audience would have heard his parables. This opportunity is open to ages 12 and up. Reading is optional to participation, all are welcome.

Fourth of July Speech by Frederick Douglass
As our nation marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this weekend, we are invited to reflect on both the meaning of freedom and the work of living into it. May the following video, in which the descendants of Frederick Douglass deliver excerpts from his famous Fourth of July speech, be a starting point for your meditations.
