Cinco de Mayo! I have it on good authority that it's celebrated with much more gusto in the United States than in Mexico outside the state of Puebla.

Round Two! - Rachel Carter Murphy
From Carter-Murphy:
On Wednesday, April 26 I submitted a video audition of “Ebben…Ne Andro Lontata” from La Wally by Alfredo Catalani for the first round of the CS Vocal Competition. That afternoon I received word that I will be advancing to the second round in San Francisco.
The CS Vocal Competition is part of the CS Music (Formerly Classical Singer Magazine) annual convention from May 26-29. During this weekend, singers and attendees will participate in over 90 masterclasses with the opportunity to observe and/or work with Met soprano Helena Brown, Broadway lead Meghan Picerno (a recent Christine from Phantom of the Opera), Deborah Voigt, faculty from Juilliard, Eastman, New England Conservatory and more industry professionals.
The competition has two main divisions: Classical and Musical Theater, with categories: High School, High School Seniors, University, and Emerging Professional. In addition to cash prizes, High School and University singers compete for scholarships and receive written feedback from University Faculty and Industry Professionals.
The second round of the competition spans May 27 and 28, and the final round is Monday, May 29. Three winners will be announced from each category and the first place winners will perform in concert that evening. Below is the website information.

Storm Stories: Stories of Ian
Alliance for the Arts, Fort Myers, continues an Oral History Project titled Storm Stories, in response to the emotional impact of Hurricane Ian .
“Storm Stories” will have a dedicated, unmanned voicemail, 239-744-3047, as well as a way to submit written and recorded responses. ... Anyone who experienced Hurricane Ian is invited to participate.
From Alliance for the Arts:
“Just tell your story about your experience through and after Hurricane Ian in whatever capacity you feel fit—uncensored and unbridled. It could be stories of resilience or trauma or pain or loss. It could be a wide range of feelings. It is meant to be cathartic and therapeutic and shareable—something that we can all relate to in some form or fashion.”

AFRICA: Birds-Beasts 'n Peeps
LCMA presents the photography of Charlene Edwards. Edwards has spent about three years of her life journeying to some twenty African countries photographing this "dark continent." She feels a magnetic pull to keep returning to explore her home away from home — exotic, vibrant, dramatic, dangerous — a continent of astounding diversity that is life-changing. In her new photo exhibit "AFRICA - Birds, Beasts 'n Peeps" she shares images from her recent three months of travel in Angola and South Africa.
"The ever-changing, breathtaking scenery is the perfect canvas on which to view a staggering variety of creatures and cultures," says Edwards. "From dramatic landscapes to fascinating and welcoming Zulu villages to legendary wildlife.

Get Backstage Access at Riverside!
Backstage Access classes return after a hiatus brought on by the pandemic. These series of adult courses take a closer look at the professional productions being presented at the Theatre.
“Along with all the great programming we have for young people, we wanted to continue our educational opportunities for adults,” says Allen D. Cornell, Producing Artistic Director of Riverside Theatre. “We explore theatre as an art form by examining specific plays on Riverside’s calendar, studying the show’s history, and learning about our production through visits with guest artists.”
Led by Kevin Quillinan, Director of Theatre Education, Backstage Access classes are part lecture, part seminar, part participation, part discussion, and seek to build a greater awareness of the many facets and collaborations involved in mounting a show.
“These classes help deepen the students’ understanding of the show and appreciation for the process involved with each production we do at Riverside,” says Mr. Quillinan. “It's a rare opportunity to hear directly from theatre professionals about what it takes to practice their craft, be it directing, acting, or designing. Each class contains a wealth of surprising and interesting nuggets of knowledge that always delight the students.”
Honky Tonk Angels – This class will focus on the impact of women in the Country music industry by telling the empowering story of three women who leave their thankless lives to pursue their dreams.
Course Dates: Meets Thursdays 10am to 12noon (May 18, May 25 & June 1)
Tuition for the three-week class is $75. Class sizes are limited. Patron Producers and Upper Level donors are entitled to some free tickets for the classes. Call the Box Office for details. To purchase, call 772-231-6990 or go online at www.riversidetheatre.com.
