Do not let the brightest lights on campus be the biggest drain on your wallet

When reviewing all the areas across campus that contribute to your lighting carbon footprint, make sure you are not looking past the most obvious one. Theatrical lighting has changed significantly over the past 15-30 years. Below are just a few of the benefits of changing to an LED solution.

  • Traditional theatrical spotlights use halogen lamps that can be over 1000W per fixture with a lamp life of only a few thousand hours.
  • To capture the whole color spectrum, as many as 5 traditional fixtures are needed in each location.
  • LED replacement fixtures are more efficient, about 300W each, and have color-changing capabilities eliminating the need for multiple fixtures in each location.
  • Well used theaters can be one of the largest energy consumers on campus, making this high on the list of buildings for a campus to convert to LED.
  • Most importantly, your performers will thank you for the huge reduction in heat generated on stage, as well as the stagehands who use and maintain the equipment.

Circadia Group serves as the owner’s representative to academic institutions as they pursue decarbonization. Through our program management work, we learn a lot about what is and is not working on different campuses. We created this newsletter to share some of our experiences with others we know who are pursuing similar sustainability initiatives.
