Neighbors In Need Special Offering, Sunday, October 6

 October 2, 2019
Friends,

I am grateful for the gift of offering the teaching this Sunday. Communion is one of my favorite parts of our Christian rhythms, and it is a joy to reflect on its meaning in our lives.

I am also caught in the tension of the dire needs around us -- our climate, our politics, justice and human rights, and basic compassion for our neighbor -- and Jeremy's call to fight against cynicism. Join me in imagining how communion and hope might help to show us a way forward.

Best,
Tyler Ung

Neighbors in Need (NIN) Offering

Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the  Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM) & two-thirds of this offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM). For more details click here.

Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to UCC churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. This year, special consideration will be given to projects focusing on serving our immigrant neighbors and communities.

Special note....several years ago our own CAJM was the recipient of funds from the NIN offering!

We will receive the NIN offering this Sunday, October 6th. To make a contribution, use the special "Neighbors In Need" envelopes in Sunday's bulletins (make checks payable to "Circular Church" with  "NIN" in the memo line ) or  contribute through e-giving in the church app or online giving webpage.

Parenting Group: The Universal Christ

The Parenting Group is studying  The Universal Christ by Richard Rohr. "F rom one of the world's most influential spiritual thinkers, a long-awaited book exploring what it means that Jesus was called 'Christ' and how this forgotten truth can transform everything we see, hope for, and believe.

We are doing a book study but you don't have to read the book!  Podcasts are available and we have  study guides at each session. We are looking for volunteers to "lead" each session -- which is no pressure. We have a companion guide that makes it easy to lead us through the discussion. We look forward to seeing you in Jeremy's office on Sundays 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. whether you have read the book or not!

Final Justice Ministry House Meeting

For the eighth year, Circular members are invited and encouraged to support justice in Charleston by participating in the Charleston Area Justice Ministry.  We begin each year by attending small house meetings where we share our personal concerns for justice and discuss what issues we would like to see CAJM address in the coming year.

If you would like to attend Circular's last scheduled house meeting, which will be this  Sunday, Oct. 6 at 12:30 p.m. at the home of Alice Wakefield,  137 Church St.  You can  sign up here to attend this meeting or contact Alice at [email protected] or 804-694-6569.

Once we have compiled all the information from over one hundred House Meetings in the 29 member congregations, we will meet for the Community Problems Assembly Nov. 4th at 7:00 p.m. to vote on our focus for the 2019-2020 year. Mark your calendars for November 7th.

One80 Place Volunteers & Donations

Every other month, Circular Church volunteers  serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at One80 Place. At the same time we host a donation drive to help with guests' most urgent needs.  In August, Circular community donated $719 in cash which purchased bedding and funded short-term rental assistance for shelter guests who are moving out of One80 Place into homes of their own. THANK YOU!

We are now signing up volunteers to serve lunch and dinner on Oct. 11 and breakfast on Oct. 12. Please see Charlotte Hope, Marcia West, Donna Hudgins, Lynn Brown, David Johnson or Carl Ahlert in Keller Hall after church services to sign up.

During our October donation drive, we are working to fund the purchase of small move-in kits. To support this drive, please use the "Donate Now" button on the right and be sure to select "One80 Place" from the list of funds. Checks may be made out to "Circular Church" with "One80 Place" in the memo line.

If you have questions, contact

Register for the Circular Women's Retreat November 8 - 10

Our 2019 women's retreat takes us to Folly Beach once again! The retreat begins at 4:00 pm Friday, November 8th and ends with a Sunday-morning-in-our-pj's worship service on November 10th.  The retreat is a time to deepen connections with the Circular community, make new friends, and strengthen relationships.

Our theme this year is "Damned If You Do/Damned If You Don't: Breaking the Mary-Martha Molds". And more information is coming about that! Here are some of Marie Stephens' thoughts on what the retreat means.

"Why I Retreat....The second weekend in November holds a special place  in my heart and on my calendar. Not just because the birthdays of two  of my children often fall on that weekend, but because it is that most  wondrous of adventures...Women's Retreat. A time when the women of the  Church gather together (in the form of a socially acceptable adult  slumber party) to deepen our connections with God, each other, and  ourselves. During the retreats I have attended, I have become friends  with amazing people, many of which I would not have met without this  time away from my routine. I attend Women's Retreat  because it reminds me that I am part of something bigger, there are  people in my tribe that have already been through situations in life I  may be going through, and that above all, I never have to feel alone.  That is why I Retreat."  -- Marie Stephens

Speak Up South Carolina Campaign

My Sister's House (MSH) will hold a "Speak Up South Carolina Campaign" in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The organization hopes to increase understanding of domestic violence as a community issue as opposed to an individual or gender specific issue.

Domestic violence is prevalent in every community; it affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. It is one of the most common crimes in the US and is a serious problem in SC. Learn more here To engage the community over the course of one week, MSH will host three events. Learn about them at mysistershouse.org Contact Debbie Easterling with questions  or call 302-228-7642.
