The Economist's cover story this week examined the connection between the coronavirus pandemic and the climate crisis. The publication proposed solutions such as carbon pricing. It reviews the European Union's planned expansion of their Emissions Trading Scheme as the bloc pursues EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposed Green Deal pandemic recovery package . Across the Atlantic, according to research from Columbia University , implementing the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 763), would reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by 36% by 2030.
This week, Rwanda became the first African nation to submit tougher climate commitments to the United Nations under the 2015 Paris Agreement. Citing increased vulnerability to floods and landslides that have destroyed more than 3,000 homes this year alone , Environment Minister Jeanne d'Arc Mujawamariya announced that the country would seek to cut emissions by 38% before 2030 through hydro and solar energy developments. President Paul Kagame (pictured above) has sought to be a leader on climate action, named a " Champion of the Earth, " by the UN Environmental Programme in 2016.
