Welcome New Board Members!

New Board President Pia Peltola
Pia Peltola grew up in Finland as one of two daughters of high school teachers and moved to the USA to attend college. While living in Washington DC, she visited Shepherdstown on an ordinary Saturday morning and fell into the Shepherdstown vortex. A few months later, she and her husband moved to downtown Shepherdstown. That was in 1997. Right away, Pia became a library patron, and her son enjoyed many happy years in the children’s department.

Since receiving her Ph.D. in sociology with emphasis on demography and survey methods from the University of Maryland, College Park, Pia has worked primarily on education-related research. She is currently employed at American Institutes for Research where she conducts research and provides technical assistance for federal and state education agencies.

Pia enjoys reading, travel, gathering with friends, yoga, theater, and dreaming about her next career as a weaver.
And New Board Vice President Terrence (Terry) Kramer
Terry Kramer has been a resident of Jefferson County since 1984. He and his wife, Liz Loughran, have been enthusiastic and passionate supporters of Shepherdstown Library for decades, including three years serving with FOSL in the late 1990’s. His three perfect children, Michael, KT and Molly, began as eager participants of the library's children’s programs … KT and Molly remain faithful and appreciative patrons after 30 years.
He is a recently retired civil engineer whose career was mostly spent managing infrastructure projects throughout the developing world that included living and working in Ethiopia, Swaziland, Indonesia, Tanzania, Honduras, Afghanistan, Kenya, Venezuela, and multiple consultancies to other wonderful countries. During their overseas adventures, books and reading were a key part of their family’s education and entertainment wherever they traveled.

Terry is an avid racquetball player and enjoys hiking, kayaking, and birding at many of the nearby outdoor recreation areas. His engineering and construction experience and expertise will be a valued resource during the soon to begin construction of the new library.
Thank you former President Sandy Brown and former Vice President Wayne Goodrich for your many years of dedicated service.
We appreciate you more than you know!

A Magical Ending

Over 125 Harry Potter fans of all ages came out for our Hogwarts at the Library celebration last weekend. They came from near and afar to collect their wands, get sorted into their houses, make magical crafts, free Dobby with the toss of a sock, drink Hogsmeade, eat wizard food, and enjoy the creatures presented by Jennifer of the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center.

Pictured left: Young raffle winner Rowan shows off his bag of Harry Potter goodies, including "Harry Potter, A Cinematic Gallery, 80 Original Images to Color and Inspire."

As our 2019 Summer Reading Program draws to a close, earlier this week, Miss Tara drew the teen raffle winner of the River Riders gift certificate for two people to enjoy a half-day tubing trip in Harper's Ferry! Congratulations to our winner, Rylie Ryder. Says Rylie's mom, "Awesome, yay!"
