Fall 2022

Do you love citizen science? We do!
We at the Science Math Resource Center are fans of citizen science and are working to build a Citizen Science Network. We will be sending this occasional e-newsletter to share news and information about citizen science events and opportunities at MSU, in Montana and across the country. If you have an item to share, an idea for building the network, or a question, please contact the MSU Science Math Resource Center.

MSU Outreach & Engagement Council funds youth citizen science project

Montana State University’s Outreach and Engagement Council has awarded seed grants to seven projects that promote outreach and engagement between the university and the community through pilot projects, research, service learning and education. The program is designed to bring MSU faculty, staff and students together with local and regional partners to address the needs of Montana communities and beyond.

One of the projects is called Engaging Montana Youth in Citizen Science and was submitted by Chloe Moreland, science communications intern with the MSU Science Math Resource Center.

The project partners with the Montana Afterschool Alliance, Eagle Mount, and Aspiring Educators of MSU to develop adaptive and engaging methods of communicating citizen science to Montana youth and youth educators.

We are presenting on citizen science at the MFPE Educator Conference in Helena; come find us!

SMRC staff and partners will be presenting on citizen science at the MFPE meeting in Helena (and virtually) on Oct. 20 and 21.

AGU hosts free Webinar on Sept 27:

Community and Citizen Science

Work at the science and society interface benefits from increased awareness of, and research in, how to share science, collaborate with inspire the arts, inform policy making, and effectively work with communities and decision makers. During this event, you will hear from leading scholars in Community and Citizen Science, followed by a facilitated discussion. Noon Mountain Time onTuesday, Sept. 27.

Great podcast for educators! The Sept. 7 episode of SciStarter's Citizen Science podcast is called Citizen Science Goes to School and features K-12. and higher education leaders who are using citizen science with students.

Who does citizen science? And why?

SciQuest is a citizen science project focused on better understanding the people who participate in citizen science or are considering doing so. Anyone is welcome to join SciQuest even if you have no citizen science experience at all!

Recent survey data from SciQuest showed:

  • respondents were a bit more likely to be women than men,
  • were about 40 years old on average (though with a range from 18 to over 100 years old!),
  • a bit more than half had college degrees.
  • 52% worked in science or technology (meaning half of the citizen scientists did not work in STEM -- that's cool!)
  • Of the 60% who had previously participated in citizen science, the three most popular projects were iNaturalist, Zooniverse’s “Chimp and See” project, and StallCatchers, though if you clumped all the Zooniverse projects together it would be the most popular project.

Here's how to participate in SciQuest

MSU was in GLOBE C3!

Montana State University and SMRC were featured in an international celebration of GLOBE Observer called Connection-Conversation-Celebration hosted virtually on July 26, 2022.

SMRC was part of the Volunteer Observer panel along with citizen scientists from Nigeria, Hawaii, Maryland and India, and citizen science photo observations of Bozeman are featured in the Participant Images Highlight Video.

Help start a student citizen science club at MSU!

We are helping start a student club at MSU for people interested in citizen science. If you know any students who may like to be a club officer, brainstorm ideas, or just be a member, please encourage them to sign our interest form or scan the QR code, and we will be in touch soon!

Cool citizen science projects

Join the largest-ever BioBlitz for fungi and friends Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

A BioBlitz encourages people to get out and discover, photograph, and identify all fungi and friends, including mushrooms, slime molds and lichen.

Participants take up to 4 photos of the species and upload the photos to most observation apps (iNaturalist, QuestaGame, MushroomObserver, SciStarter, etc). The goal is to collect as much data on what fungi are where across the entire continent of North America (22 countries).

Prizes available for observations and online mushroom hunts!

Smithsonian Transcriptions: Not all citizen science is "science"

The Smithsonian Transcription Center engages the public in making its priceless collections more accessible. Digital Volunteers called “volunpeers” transcribe historical documents and collection records to facilitate research and excite learning in audiences everywhere. Participants have the chance to transcribe a diverse array of collection materials drawn from Smithsonian holdings in science, history, art, and culture. Even transcribing one line is a big help!
