Pinellas County leadership visits Washington to advocate for federal beach nourishment

Pinellas County is continuing to fight for the reestablishment of our federally funded beach nourishment projects. This month, a delegation led by Commissioner Kathleen Peters traveled to Washington to meet with White House staff, elected officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The delegation included Commissioner Chris Scherer, County Administrator Barry Burton and Public Works director Kelli Hammer Levy. Read more about the push to restore our beaches.

Dedicating Historical Marker for Whispering Souls African American Cemetery

Whispering Souls African American Cemetery, near Safety Harbor, was once abandoned and overgrown. Through the work of volunteers, community advocates and elected officials, it is now restored and dignified. The Pinellas County Historic Preservation Board recently dedicated a Florida Historical Marker there. County Commission Chair Brian Scott led the ceremony and we hope you find this video as moving as the experience.

$813 million in hurricane recovery funds coming to Pinellas

Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Pinellas County asked the federal government for disaster recovery funds to help our low to moderate income residents rebuild homes, businesses and communities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding the County the largest grant given to any local government following last year’s storms: more than $813 million.

The County is working with cities and other partners to prioritize unmet needs for long-term recovery, including rebuilding homes and businesses, help for renters, restoring infrastructure, and storm mitigation. We are developing an Action Plan and will be holding a series of in-person and virtual meetings in April and May. We hope to hear from everyone to make sure these important Community Development Block Grant disaster funds go where they’re needed most. More about the grant and how to get involved will be posted on pinellas.gov/cdbg-dr in the near future.

Care About Me expands access to behavioral health services to school-aged kids

One in four Pinellas County teens struggle with mental health issues such as suicidal thoughts. Florida’s broader behavioral health crisis affects over 400,000 children, yet only half receive the necessary care. Pinellas County's coordinated access model, Care About Me, and the Pinellas County School System are working together to provide direct access to mental health, substance use and addiction services.

After receiving parent or guardian consent, our specialists connect them to a provider who can address their specific needs. This approach significantly improves the chances of a successful outcome while supporting families. Care About Me meets families where they are rather than simply providing a phone number to find services. Learn more.
