Community Brief from Citrus Elementary School
Soaring to New Heights! Bee Respectful. Bee Responsible. Bee Safe. Bee a Problem Solver.
Tuesday, October 1, 2019

October is a very busy month at Citrus Elementary. The end of the first marking period is October 16th, and that is right around the corner. We are proud of the growth our students have made in the first grading period, and our teachers are preparing report cards to share with parents.

Due to Hurricane Dorian, the first prioritized make-up day is Friday, October 18th. The School Board is currently in the process of determining if the day can be moved to Thursday, October 17th. Once the decision has been made you will be notified. Superintendent Dr. Jenkins has waived November 25th as a hurricane make-up day, therefore Thanksgiving week break will remain intact for families.

We are looking forward to our report card conferences with parents. These conferences provide an essential link between home and school. Our teachers are currently working on creating schedules to accommodate everyone's needs. Please contact your child's teacher to schedule your appointment.

You can expect the conferences to last approximately 15-20 minutes. During this time, your child's teacher may review your child's portfolio with you. This normally contains samples of your child's work from the beginning of the school year through the date of your conference. In addition, the teacher may go over test scores, the results of classroom quizzes, attendance records, and any disciplinary information if that is pertinent. Our teachers will also share any observations they have made about your child and any concerns they may have at this point. The input you provide during these conferences will help us help your child succeed in the classroom.

October is National Bullying Month and we will be wearing orange on Wednesday, October 23rd which is Unity Day.  We will wear orange to send one large "orange" message of acceptance, kindness and inclusion to unite against bullying.  We will also be celebrating Red Ribbon Week during the week of October 21st- 25th. In conjunction with National Bullying Month, our theme is "Send a Message. Stay Drug Free!" During the week there will be many activities for students to participate to show how they will succeed in life and say no to drugs.

We want to encourage you to become involved in your child's education. The time you spend will be well worth the investment!

Sincerely,

Delaine Bender
Proud Principal

Walking in Line
Ms. Gatlin's class

Ms. Gatlin's class is demonstrating how to walk in a straight line. They are following the school-wide expectations for walking in line!

Free Breakfast and Lunch

We are a Provision II school which entitles all students to receive free breakfast and lunch!  Breakfast is served daily from 8:15am to 8:45am. It is best if your child arrives by 8:15am to eat breakfast so that they have enough time to eat and get to class on time.

Skyward Student Information System

Orange County Public Schools is excited to announce that we have moved to a new student information system. For parents and guardians, this means that you will no longer use Progress Book and Parent Access to view your student's information.

You will now use the Skyward Family Access system. Further details and training materials can be found on the main OCPS webpage (ocps.net), select Students and Parents from the top menu. Then click on Skyward. You will need to use the "Skyward Family Access through LaunchPad" documentation to register for a LaunchPad account. You will sign into LaunchPad each time you want to access Skyward. LaunchPad will then automatically log you into Skyward Family Access. Use the "Skyward Family Access" documentation to navigate the system to see important information for your student such as grades and attendance.

Please complete the form on the website if you experience any issues while trying to register for a LaunchPad account or within Skyward Family Access. Then provide the form to your student's school. Thank you for your support as we transition to the new student information system.

From the Media Center . . .

We just wrapped up our first Book Fair of the year! Thank you to the students, parents and volunteers for making it a great success! By purchasing books and materials at the Book Fair, you enable our school to buy more new books for the Media Center. And this year, we were able to share the wealth with our teachers and allow them to shop for their classroom libraries also!

With the whirlwind of school starting and the book fair over, I was finally able to process all of the new books we purchased last year. We have multiple copies of our new Sunshine State books. So far, the favorite of students (and teachers!) seems to be Tumble and Blue, the story of a golden gator, two cursed kids and how they take their destinies into their own hands. Great read! And of course, we have the newest Dog Man book - For Whom the Ball Rolls!

Parents, I have been asked if it's possible for parents to come in and check out books and the answer is YES! If you would like to stop by and check out some books for your student, please give me a call and we can set up a time for you to come in and visit the Media Center.

Schoolstore.com

The winning Golden Ticket is still in someone's hands!  A big "Thank You" to all our families who have participated in our SchoolStore email campaign.  However, as of this morning...the winning Golden Ticket number has not been entered.

If you have not participated, the winning ticket may be in your hands.  Please help us raise needed funds with this simple and safe email program by participating today.  Your family may have the Winning Golden Ticket!

You can still support PTA by shopping through Schoolstore.com and choose Citrus Elementary in Ocoee.  You may order merchandise but did you know you can shop several merchants through schoolstore.com such as Macys, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Kohl's, Sam's Club, Old Navy, etc. and a portion of the proceeds will come back to the school.  For example if you shop from Walmart, 1%-4% of your purchase will come back to our school. The good news is you can shop throughout the year because there is not a time limit on shopping!
