SPD Communications Liaison Nikki Monari, City Director of Communications Amanda Brown, CWLP Director of Customer & Media Relations Amber Sabin and Mayor Misty Buscher
Wooden It Be Lovely's Little Black Dress gala was a fantastic event put on by a fantastic local organization. I attended in support of their mission of empowering women healing from lives of poverty, addiction, and trauma.
This is a local organization that is doing GREAT work with its mission to provide women with meaningful employment, job training, supportive relationships, and even housing opportunities.
Over 500 guests attended the event and were addressed by WIBL Executive Director Margaret Ann Jessup and two women telling their heart-warming stories of how the organization helped change their lives.
Wooden It Be Lovely provides women healing from lives of poverty or whom are in recovery with a unique and empowering job. The women refurbish donated wood furniture, create unique products, and make candles. They sell their products to the public. The work environment is supportive and empowering.
WIBL operates its "Be Lovely Boutique" at 801 S. Grand Avenue. Through refurbishing donated furniture, sewing unique products, and making candles, the women of WIBL gain not only job skills but also dignity, hope, and a sense of community. Side by side with volunteers, they share in work that restores both furniture and lives.
Beyond the boutique, there are many ways to get involved to support Wooden It Be Lovely. You can donate furniture, donate time by volunteering, attend events and more.
Mayor Misty Buscher
Wooden It Be Lovely was founded in 2016 by Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church and became an independent nonprofit in 2021.

Springfield Underpasses Win America’s
Transportation Awards for Illinois
| | |
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has received top honors in America’s Transportation Awards for two Springfield projects that are improving safety and quality of life. The Jefferson and Madison Street underpasses, the latest completed portion of the Springfield Rail Improvements Project, earned recognition in the “Safety – Medium Project” category.
Managed by the City of Springfield with IDOT oversight and major state investment, the project lowered both streets to separate vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians from railroad tracks. The underpasses have improved traffic reliability, reduced noise and emissions, and enhanced emergency response.
IDOT also won in the “Operations Excellence – Small Project” category for its extensive planning and management of traffic during last year’s total solar eclipse. Months of preparation and coordination with partner agencies ensured that the influx of travelers was handled smoothly, with no major incidents.
“These projects showcase the impact of strong partnerships and planning on safety and quality of life in Illinois,” said IDOT Secretary Gia Biagi.
The City of Springfield is proud to partner with IDOT on the Springfield Rail Improvements Project!
