Police department participates in 2017 Law Enforcement Torch Run
3.5 mile run helps support local Special Olympics programs
Last Thursday, the San Gabriel Police Department participated in a 3.5 mile run from the LASD Temple City Station to the I-10 Freeway at Del Mar Avenue in support of local Special Olympics programs. Known as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, this yearly event links up nearly 97,000 law enforcement members from across the country in a show of solidarity to support Special Olympics athletes across the nation.

Spend your Independence Day at San Gabriel's Kids' Day & 4th of July Parade! The festivities will be held Tuesday, July 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will feature a parade, food, games and more!

Kids' Travel Club begins summer season
Looking for something fun to do this summer? Take a trip with the Kids' Travel Club! Community Services is planning trips to Knott's Berry Farm, Raging Waters and the Annual Penny Carnival. There is a cost for both Knott's Berry Farm and Raging Waters and you can register at the Community Services Department at 250 S. Mission Drive.
City's financial report for May 2017
The city's monthly financial report, which includes a revenue and expenditure summary as well as a trial balance for the month ending on May 31, 2017 is now available on the city's website.
Surf's Up San Gabriel wraps up
Summer Nights series runs now until August 10
A special thank you to everyone that attended this year's Surf's Up San Gabriel last Thursday in the historic Mission District. Now that Surf's Up has concluded, be sure to share your memories on social media using #SurfsUpSG, and click through some of our favorite photos from this year's event on our Facebook page.

While Surf's Up 2017 fades into the sunset, the city's Summer Nights series continues now until August 10, with the Big City Hillbillies performing in Vincent Lugo Park on June 15 at 6:30 p.m. Please join us for a night of fun!
Police department's DUI checkpoint nets one arrest
The San Gabriel Police Department conducted a DUI/driver's license checkpoint last Friday along South San Gabriel Boulevard from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., screening 489 vehicles and netting 1 DUI-alcohol arrest. In addition, two drivers were cited and arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked, while four general citations were issued. Temperatures expected to rise
Stay cool with these safety tips
With temperatures expected to rise this week, be sure to stay cool by limiting your exposure to the sun and avoid going out between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you do go outside, be sure to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water. If you do not have air conditioning, the city's cooling center can be found at the Asian Youth Center at 100 W. Clary Ave.
Be sure to call the Asian Youth Center for their daily operating hours at 626.309.0622. Residents can also call 211 for the nearest cooling center in Los Angeles County.

Planning Commission recommends amendment to Historic Preservation Ordinance to City Council
In a 5-0 vote this past Monday, the Planning Commission voted to recommend approval to the City Council for a zone text amendment designed to update and strengthen the Historic Preservation Ordinance. The proposed historic preservation cultural resource ordinance will replace the current ordinance and will outline criteria and procedures for designation as well as the creation of a stand alone commission. The commission would administer the city's Historic Preservation Ordinance and make recommendations to the City Council on preservation-related items.

The Planning Commission also heard applications for several Conditional Use Permits to allow for existing massage establishments to continue their operations. More information from Monday's meeting can be found in the link below.
  Mission Playhouse
Exciting changes at the Playhouse
The Playhouse would like to introduce its new Event Coordinator Elias Bourjeili and Production Supervisor John Holder!

Elias has been a master electrician and deck hand at the Playhouse for over 10 years. As Event Coordinator, Elias is responsible for event production, overseeing the theater's stage crew, staffing, training and scheduling. He manages production improvement projects and maintains equipment logs and repairs.

John first came to the Playhouse in 1999 as a member of SGVMT's production of "My Fair Lady" and "Desert Song." In his new title of Production Supervisor, John meets regularly with Playhouse clients, creating event estimates and billing paperwork. He manages production related technical improvement projects and supervises the Event Coordinator.
Ballet coming this weekend
On Saturday, June 17th, at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., a beautiful ballet experience awaits you with Pasadena Civic Ballet's "Somewhere in Time."

CONSTRUCTION ALERTS:

Mission Road from San Gabriel Boulevard to Main Street:
From now until June 21, the contractor will remove and replace the pavement along Mission Road from San Gabriel Boulevard to Main Street. Mission Road will remain open and westbound traffic will be maintained during phase 1 of the construction process. Except for Del Mar Avenue, side streets south of Mission Road will not have access. Driveway access may be impacted during work hours, and no street parking will be permitted on Mission Road throughout the duration of the project.
