A Big Woot Woot for Finance
Administrative Business Department
Budgets are complex and hard to understand for most of us, but the Administrative Business Department at the City of Red Wing has just won some serious recognition for making our budgets understandable for anyone who wants to read them. First, they won a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, the highest recognition in government accounting and reporting, and they won it for the thirteenth year in a row! They also earned an Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting (PAFR). The PAFR is an easy-to-read version of the budget that makes high finance digestible for the average reader. The PAFR our team created is literally award-winning; give it a read sometime. Kudos to Marshall Hallock, Administrative Business Director; Sue Iverson, Finance & Accounting Manager; and the team behind them. Thanks for your great work.
An Egg-cellent Addition
Chickens Graphic
What time is it? It’s half-past hen and now chickens have been approved to live within the city limits! With this egg-cellent new ordinance, you can raise hens in your backyard. Read the full details and requirements here. Who's ready for some omelets?
Food Waste May Soon Be Wasted No More
We're pretty excited about this one; the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) awarded Red Wing a $140,000 grant for a feasibility study to bring a food waste composting program to our region! This study will determine the best way to divert organic materials, such as food waste and paper products, away from landfills and turn them into nutrient-rich soil instead. With over 6,000 residential and commercial properties in Red Wing alone, this could take an estimated 2,271 tons of waste out of our landfills each year. We'll report on the study findings once they are complete, but with this grant, we’re one giant step closer to making food and organic waste composting a reality for our region.
No Longer Lost in Translation

What's In A Name - Memorial Park
You might call it Memorial Park, but this special place has had at least two other names before that. First named by native ancestors of the Prairie Island Indian Community, then later called Sorin's Bluff, the history behind this park is as fascinating as the people who have named it. Join Marshall Laidlaw as he shares the lesser-known history behind one of Red Wing's most iconic and beloved public spaces.
We're Hiring

Fountain Sparkling Again
In 2020, an anonymous donor gave the City of Red Wing funds to restore the historic fountain in John Rich Park. You might have noticed the fountain under construction since then, but as of May this year, the restoration is fully complete. Learn what it took to restore this regal beauty in the following video. It will make you appreciate John Rich Park even more the next time you stop by. Once again, we humbly thank our anonymous donor. Because of you, the fountain will stand in the heart of our city for another 100 years.

All in a Day's Work
Ryan Edquist Photo
If Ryan Edquist, Maintenance 1, has learned one thing from his 20 years with the City, it’s that winter is where the fun happens. “Not many people enjoy plowing, but I do,” says Ryan. After he transferred from the Waste Campus 15 years ago, he started working with the Streets Division, which led him to plowing. He used to dismiss those early morning phone notifications alerting him to icy roads or late night snowfall, but now he’s out of bed and already clearing them before others even get the alerts. Luckily for those of us who drive on those roads, plowing is fun and exciting work for Ryan. When he’s not working hard to keep our parks and boulevards in outstanding condition, Ryan heads out on the water from his boathouse to catch his next big fish. He’s hoping to beat his personal record of a 29 in. walleye. Eventually, he hopes to move out to the country with his wife and two children where he can properly ride his shared collection of four-wheelers. Whether you see Ryan tinkering on maintenance equipment or mowing our parks, Ryan will be on the job and working hard for years to come. We’re glad to have him behind the wheel; congratulations on 20 years, Ryan!
