Good afternoon, San Gabriel:
Last weekend marked another outstanding annual tradition in San Gabriel, the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt.  A special thanks goes to the staff in Community Services for their work in assembling a wonderful day of family fun for everyone, and to our friends at Kiwanis for their longstanding partnership.  Please let them know how much you appreciate their efforts.

Here's what else is happening in San Gabriel this week!

  News from City Hall
San Gabriel Blvd./Mission Road intersection improvement project begins
Commuters traveling through one of San Gabriel's most challenging intersections will soon see relief under an improvement plan approved by the City Council.

The City Council has awarded a contract to Sequel Contractors, Inc. for street improvements, construction of a right turn lane on Mission Road, and traffic signal upgrades. The contractor started work this week on the long-awaited project, and the project will be completed by the end of September 2017.

The work during the month of April includes curb, gutter, and pavement removal along the edges of the roadway. The contractor will also begin underground storm drain work. There will be lane and sidewalk detours on San Gabriel Blvd. between Fairview and Grand and on Mission Road between Pine and San Gabriel Blvd. at various times.

Electronic message signs, set on the roadways leading to the project, will keep motorists and pedestrians advised of the construction activities. Please follow the traffic control signs and delineators; and please reduce driving speeds while traveling through this area. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to create another Great Streets Improvement and raise the levels of safety and service on our streets.

For more information, call the Public Works Department at 626.308.2825.

SGV Humane Society urges caution as diseased bats found in nearby cities
Although no cases have been reported within San Gabriel yet, nearby cities such as Arcadia, Pasadena, Monrovia, Glendale and more have had confirmed cases of rabid bats. In 2016, Los Angeles County reported 38 total bats that tested positive for rabies; to view the detailed cases, visit: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/vet/rabiesmap2016.htm. Multiple cases have been reported in 2017, and the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society just handled a case in Rosemead.

Bat activity increases in the summer and fall, so it is exprected that more of these cases will occur as temperatures get warmer. Residents are advised to never touch a bat with bare hands and to keep their pet rabies vaccinations up-to-date.

To find out more information about rabies, visit the Public Health Department's rabies fact sheet at: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/vet/rabies.htm . Please contact the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society at 626.286.1159 for further questions or to report an incident.
