Join us for Fire Service Day at the San Gabriel Fire Department
Have you every wanted to take a peek behind the scenes of your neighborhood fire department? Now's your chance! On Saturday, May 13, the San Gabriel Fire Department will be hosting its annual Fire Service Day at Fire Station 51 located at 1303 S Del Mar Avenue between the hours of 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

The day will be filled with fun activities such as live demonstrations, station tours, pictures with firefighters and much, much more. There will also be FREE grilled hot dogs and water while supplies last.

Bring the family and come and meet your local heroes!

More open space to enjoy in San Gabriel
Enjoy Washington and Coolidge Elementary Schools in the evenings, on weekends and on holidays starting May 1. The City of San Gabriel is collaborating with the San Gabriel Unified School District to create additional open space for our residents to enjoy. Residents are able to use the school site as a park with amenities that include: play equipment, basketball courts, open field space and tennis courts (Washington School only).

Bring the family out for a picnic and day of fun! Park hours are Monday thru Friday, 5:00 p.m. to dusk and Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to dusk. Expanded hours starting Jun. 5 thru Aug. 18 are Monday thru Friday, 1:00 p.m. to dusk and Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to dusk.

Celebrate Public Works Day with us
The San Gabriel Public Works Department will host its annual Public Works Day on Thursday, May 25 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Vincent Lugo Park (corner of Wells and Ramona).

The event is free and open to the public. Guests will enjoy a FREE barbecue lunch and FREE giveaways. There will be booths from various utilities and contractors that service San Gabriel, including Athens Services, West Coast Arborists, San Gabriel County Water District, Southern California Edison and the San Gabriel Humane Society.

The city's celebration will be held in conjunction with National Public Works Week. This year's theme for the event is "Public Works Connects Us," which speaks to the essential nature of Public Works' services for everyday quality of life in the community.

Event attendees will have a chance to see equipment demonstrations from Public Works staff and learn more about how city crews work hard to take care of parks, streets, sidewalks, trees, signals, sewers and storm drains.

Summer registration opens May 22
Summer is almost here and the San Gabriel Community Services Department has a great season planned for you, your family and friends! Registration for our popular summer day camp is already under way and registration for recreation classes and swim instruction begins on May 22. Registration is easy! You can register in person, by phone, mail or online. Our programs fill up quickly so be sure to register early. Most classes begin the week of Jun. 12. To register in person, visit the Community Services Department located at 250 S Mission Drive.

Commission approves one conditional use permit, previews historic preservation cultural resource ordinance
At its last meeting, the Planning Commission:
  • Approved a Conditional Use Permit to allow an existing massage establishment at 102 S. Mission Drive to continue operation.
  • Received a preview of the proposed Historic Preservation Cultural Resource Ordinance.
Monthly investment report available online
The City's monthly investment report, which includes an individual listing of all City of San Gabriel investments and deposits, as well as a summary of the portfolio's composition and investment compliance certification for the month ending April 30, 2017 is now available online.

  Mission Playhouse
The Latin Wave continues
Stop by the Playhouse's Glass Room Gallery from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, May 11-21 for a free exhibition, 'Exploring Myth, Illusion & Cultural Appropriation,' that explores early L.A. and the Mexican American experience. 

A part of The Latin Wave series, the exhibition features photographs, costumes and printed materials from the Huntington Library, Los Angeles Public Library, Mission Playhouse, San Gabriel Historical Association and private collections. It is curated by Dr. Catherine Gudis, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Public History Program at UC Riverside and Ph.D. student Mayela Caro.

Starting Thursday, May 18 through Sunday, May 21, 'They Shoot Mexicans, Don't They?' is a special immersive theatre experience that tells the story of a New York Producer's plan to make a silent movie about the fabled Mission Play and features live music from members of the Grammy winning band Quetzal.

On Sunday, May 21 at 12:00 p.m., join us for panel-led reflections on the portrayal of Latinos in early Hollywood followed by facilitated small group discussions with panelists from the worlds of journalism and academia. The symposium is free and takes place at the Grapevine Room in the Adult Recreation Center adjacent to the Playhouse. Click here to RSVP for the symposium.
Conservatory in Concert coming to the Mission Playhouse this weekend
On Saturday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m., the talented students of Pasadena Dance Theatre's Consevatory of Performing Arts will be performing in PDT's annual Spring performance, 'Conservatory in Concert.' Dancers range from those just embarking on their ballet education to advanced students on the cusp of dancing in college or for professional companies.
